Dare Elementary Second Grade Teacher
May-June News to Use
Mrs. LaPorte’s class

It is hard to believe that the end of the year is upon us.  You should be very proud of all the accomplishments your children have made this year.  It has been a wonderful experience for me to see this class grow and become ready to move on to third grade.

Our reading will continue to focus on chapter books and the reading skills outlined in their reading journals.  We are enjoying our discussions that come from checking everyone’s homework and learning from our mistakes.  Other skills we will focus on this quarter include retelling stories we have read, theme, and the difference between realism and fantasy.

We have some great paragraph writers in this class.  The children have really mastered writing a basic paragraph. Now I would like to see them expanding those paragraphs by adding adjectives, adverbs and more details.

Our plant unit is ending, however we will continue to watch our plants growing at home and in the garden that is behind the school.  Our class was able to help plant beets and radishes and sunflowers in our school garden.  If you have a chance come up and see all that is growing here at Dare.

Our Social studies unit for the last quarter will be economics.  This is a great unit in which your child is able to participate in an e-bay like auction set up by Mrs. Jones our computer expert.  You can help your child with this unit by talking about purchases you make at stores or on-line.  How do you pay, and where does the money come from are you using cash or credit?  Making children aware of debit cards, checks and cash will help them understand how finances work.  Also discuss where the products you are buying come from.  Are they from a factory, a farm or made by a person?  These are all discussions we will be having in class.

Finally, as we end the year I will be testing your students to gauge the progress they have made in second grade.  If you are interested in discussing this progress with me please let me know and we will schedule an end of year conference.  I am also adding our important dates to the bottom of this letter; please mark them on your calendar.
