COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
VHCC MTH 163/164 Precalculus I & II - Prerequisites: a placement recommendation for MTH 163 and Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry or equivalent. First semester presents college algebra, matrices, and algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Second semester presents trigonometry, analytic geometry, and sequences and series.
VHCC MTH 271/272 Applied Calculus I & II - Prerequisite: VHCC Pre-Calculus 163. Presents limits, continuity, differentiation of algebraic and transcendental functions with applications, and an introduction to integration. Second semester presents techniques of integration, multivariable calculus, and an introduction to differential equations.
Local Pre-Calculus - Prerequisite: Algebra II. Topics covered in this course will include functions; new functions from old; algebraic functions; trigonometric functions; exponential and logarithm functions; conic sections, polar coordinates, and parametric equations.
Trigonometry - Prerequisite: Algebra II. This course is divided into two semesters of study. The first semester includes the introduction of trigonometry with emphasis of the following topics: basic circular functions, graphs of circular functions, inverses of circular functions and their graphs, and trigonometric functions. The second semester includes the study of the following topics: vectors, analytic geometry of points and lines, coordinate geometry of conic sections, exponential and logarithmic functions, and complex numbers.
Geometry – Prerequisite: Algebra I. This course stresses the basic structures of geometry and the development of formal proofs. Topics covered in this course will include working with lines and angles; working with shapes in 2 and 3 dimensions; using ratio and proportion; working with scale drawings; using signed numbers and vectors; using right triangle relationships; using trig functions; geometry in the workplace; solving problems with computer graphics; spatial visualization; coordinate geometry; logic; and transformations. Recommended county pacing will be used as a guideline. Throughout the course the Virginia SOLs will be followed.
GRADING SCALE
Geometry, Trigonometry, and Local Pre-Calculus will have the county grading scale.
VHCC courses will have the traditional 10 point college grading scale.
In all courses grades will be taken on random homework assignments, quizzes and pop quizzes, tests, major tests, and notebook quizzes.
PROGRESS REPORTS
Progress reports will be sent home with students after each 4 1/2 weeks for parent information. They will also be available on-line for your convenience. Please be sure to pick up your log-in and password from the office so that you can access this information on Parent Portal.
