ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES

WHAT IS AN ADVANCED PLACEMENT ( AP ) LEVEL CLASS ?

Advanced placement ( AP ) classes are year long college level classes , authorized by the College Board , that are taught in high schools . The subject matter in these classes is taught at the expected college freshman and sophmore level .

WHY SHOULD I TAKE AN AP LEVEL COURSE ?

If you are planning to go to college it is highly recommended that you should take at least one AP level class . There are four reasons for this .

First , an AP course presents a challenging environment that definitely prepares students for rigorous college work . Taking an AP course will also generate greater self-confidence and motivation in a student .

Second , taking an AP course will significantly imporve a student's chances of being accepted to the college or university of their choice .

Third , taking AP courses demonstrates a committment to , and seriousness about , your academics and personal development . This can only help a student when they appeal for scholarships .

Fourth , a student may be able to earn early college credit and advanced standing by taking an AP class . This potential credit will depend on the grade earned in the AP class , and the policies of the college that the student plans to attend .

WHAT TYPE OF AP COURSE SHOULD I TAKE ?

Most colleges strongly recommend that prospective students not get caught up in a " numbers game " of trying " out score " other students in the amount of AP courses they take . They advise prospective students that a focused approach to taking AP courses will help them much more in the competition to be accepted to the college of their choice .

What the colleges recommend is that students take AP classes in the general area that they are thinking of majoring in at college . In fact , most of the colleges clearly say that students who focus their high school AP course selection toward their college major will be given stronger consideration for acceptance . Therefore , if you are planning to go to college , and planning to major in any of the following areas of studies ( see the list below ) , you should seriously consider taking at least one AP class offered through Kofa's Social Sciences Department .

College areas of study : Business / Economics , Medical , Information Technology , Education , Law , Political Science / Government , Engineering , History , Criminal Justice , Public Service , Sociology , and Psychology

SOCIAL SCIENCE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

If you are planning to go to college , and are going to pursue a degree in one of the areas of study highlighted above in the AP section , then you will want to take as many of your high school electives from the courses offered here by the Kofa Social Sciences Department . If you are planning to go to college and pursue a degree in another area of study ( math , science , fine arts , English / literature , etc . ) , then we recommend that you focus taking your high school electives from the courses made available from those Kofa departments .

If you are not planning to go on to college , then we recommend that you focus taking your high school electives from those offered by Kofa's Business Technology Department .
