Math            Grade 6

I am looking forward to working with you this year.   Our textbook is Harcourt Math for grade 6.  We will also use the Practice Workbook that goes with our textbook.

Supplies:   I expect you to keep notes, assignments and all returned quiz and test papers in a 1 inch binder that is organized so that you can find materials easily.  I prefer all notes and assignments to be done on wide rule loose leaf paper.  You may clean out the binder after each test and store these cleaned out papers at home until the exam.  You should always have a ruler, pencil, textbook, practice workbook, loose leaf paper and a red correcting pen with you.

Grading:  The quarter grade will be determined as follows.

• Graded Assignment average will be 30%.

• Quiz average will be 30%.

• Test average will be 40%.

Assignments:  Practice is essential to learning math. You should expect an assignment on most days that will be started in class and finished at home.  You will take notes from the board including examples similar to assignment problems that you should be able to follow when you are on your own.   Assignments must be completed in pencil neatly and on time.  All work is to be shown.  Every assignment will be checked for completeness and should be corrected using a red pen in class.  These completeness checks will be counted as part of the assignment grade.  Late assignments will receive half credit.  A pattern of not completing assignments will result in the notification of a parent.  Once or twice a week, I will collect the assignment and grade it for correctness.  I do not give extra credit assignments.

Quizzes:  Quizzes will be both announced and pop and will occur at least once a week.

Tests:  Tests will be announced a week in advance and will occur at least twice a quarter.  You should study and practice for every test as there will be no retests given for failing grades.  It is the responsibility of the student to have all tests signed by a parent and returned the next day.  I put the date when tests are handed back to the students on my webpage.  Having the test signed and returned will count as an assignment grade.  Please have your parent sign the test on the blank provided.

Webpage:  I update my webpage for Math 6 daily.  Nightly assignments are on the webpage. The test dates and the dates that tests are returned to be signed are given on the webpage as well.  Also given is a general idea of what material we are covering at any time.

Absences:  Absentee work will be given full credit if it is completed within two days of the student’s return unless other arrangements are made with the teacher.  You should get the notes and assignment for the lesson missed either from a friend in the class or by reading the lesson pages from the book noted on your assignment sheet left on the red bench.  On the day the student returns, he/she should be prepared to take any missed tests after school unless other arrangements are made.  Test papers are graded and returned the next school day unless a student from the class was absent and not able to take the test.  In this instance, I have to hold all test papers until the test has been made up.  Failure to make up work will result in a grade of zero.

Conduct:  I expect you to listen attentively and quietly during the lesson.  I expect you to respond respectfully when called upon.  Parent notification will result from disrespect or behavior problems.

Extra Help:  I am available to work with you before school from 7:30 – 7:45.

A copy of these policies is provided on my webpage.
