Salve! Guten Tag! Bonjour! ¡Buenos Días!
Welcome to the Wonderful World of IFL!

Introduction to Foreign Language is a semester elective exposing students to the languages and cultures of Latin, French, German and Spanish. In addition, students will explore the history and origins of human language, focusing primarily on the development of the Indo-European language family. Students will compare and contrast the other languages and cultures and learn how other languages and cultures have influenced the English language and the American culture. With each language, we will study a particular aspect of its culture which affects American culture today. We study how ancient Romans laid out their cities, and how we still follow that same model today. We learn the literary elements of a fairy tale, and how the Grimm Brothers set the standard for our literature today. We learn many French food terms and how to navigate a French menu. We study Hispanic life in America today. When time allows, we learn little bits from many other world languages. Some of the languages we have studied include: American Sign Language, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Hebrew, Hindi, Farsi, Turkish, Chinese, Vietnamese and Arabic.
11/4 Begin the new quarter! We start with a trip to Germany! (via video). See film on Germany and complete the accompanying WS.
11/6 More German vocabulary through the packet and our songs!
11/9 Storytelling in German- you will be surprised at how much you already know. Storytelling style in the style of a fairy tale. What is a fairy tale? What makes it different from a legend? a myth? a nursery rhyme? Learn all of this and learn about the famous brothers named Grimm.
11/11 Veteran's Day. Armistice Day. The War to end all wars. How did this day affect the German speaking people of Europe? Continue with German clothing and colors. See power point and complete WS
11/13 SIng in German and learn more vocab.
11/16 Muzzy! Learn more German words and practice with Muzzy! Complete WS.
11/18 The legend (not fairy tale) of the Lorelei and the Rhine River. See Willi die Maus (Willy the mouse) discover the Rhine River and its story. Complete WS
11/20 Review elements of fairy tales, vocabulary and begin creating our own Fairy Tale skits. Use as much German as possible!
11/23 1st period has PAT.
11/24 Work on fairy tale skits. 12/4 In anticipation of St Nicholas Day (the eve of Dec 5 and the day of Dec 6) you will complete a story and a puzzle all including the vocabulary associated with this story of Nikolaus. (You will have a sub that day- please remember I expect excellent behavior!)
12/9 & 10 You will perform your Fairy Tale Skits in German! We will then wave "Auf Wiedersehen" to German and say, "Bonjour!" to French!
12/11 French alphabet, colors, numbers. Pronunciation.

Check this page regularly to find out what we are doing each day. (Special note to 5th period: Due to our meeting daily, the dates may not match exactly. Please understand this and accomodate this accordingly. ) I have assigned the dates bases on ODD days- EVEN classes must adjust accordingly. Remember these facts:
Our language family is called: Indo-European.
Romance languages are based on Latin (the language of Rome)
English is a Germanic language.
French and Spanish are Romance languages ( as are: Italian, Portugese, and Romanian)
Therefore: French and Spanish are sisters
German and English are sisters
German and English are cousins to French and Spanish
