HW due Monday, Nov 23:

final draft of advertisement for your medieval city due; you should also practice for the presentation (you will briefly present your ad to the class and point out the FCAs)

make sure you have incorporprated all of the FCAs into your ad that were mentioned in class:

1. creative, catchy slogan for your city ad (2 points)
2. address at least 3 target audiences out of these 4:
- merchants (businesspeople)   - artisans (make things)   - serfs    - bankers

your ad should 'speak' to three of these groups with a statement or bullet point addressing them in some way, saying why each of those groups should come to your city (3 points for each group you address/speak to)

3. at least 2 quotes (that you make up) from residents of your city, discussing how great your city is and why people should move there (2 points for each quote)

4. your presentation to the class, where you point out the FCAs in your ad, is worth 5 points

so overall this ad project (including the presentation) will count as a 20 point quiz grade

brainstorm design, information you plan to include, quote, tagline/slogan


HW due Thursday, Nov 19:

review section 4 (chapter 8) and the 5 main sub sections (with the red headings).  write 5 creative, catchy newspaper headlines that sum up and capture the main idea of each of those 5 sub sections  (so write one headline for each sub section)




HW due for Tuesday, Nov 17:

see pg 194 in your textbook - imagine you are the knight visiting the monastery described on this page

1. on the plain white piece of paper you were given in class, write a journal entry at least a 1/2 page long in which you include specific details relating to ONE of the four "scenarios" you were assigned in class.  imagine you are there, you are reacting to what you are seeing - you are impressed, you are not impressed, whatever you want - just have a perspective and imagine you are seeing the actions of the monks first-hand and you are writing about them in your journal

2. "illuminate" or illustrate/decorate the page as the monks used to do in the Middle Ages when they copied manuscripts (books)

prepare for open-note/open-binder QUIZ focusing on chapter 8 sections 1, 2 and 3

to prepare for quiz, review

* ALL worksheets distributed in class (there was a list of these worksheets on the white board in class on Friday)
* notes from the Monty Python and the Holy Grail movie (the worksheet you completed and we reviewed after we finished the movie)

HW due for Tuesday,  Nov 10:

now that you have seen the entire "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" movie, write a final critical analysis of the movie, including elements you liked and disliked about the movie.  explain overall why you think this was a valuable movie to see while we study the Middle Ages.  this review should be about a half page in length and written in paragraph format.



HW due Monday, Nov 9:

write a critical review of what you have seen so far of the movie we watched in class (Monty Python and The Holy Grail)

in a well-written paragraph, discuss at least:

2 things you liked about the movie so far
2 things you didn't like about the movie so far
at least 3 elements from the Middle Ages that are featured/highlighted in the movie


HW due Friday, Nov 6:

nothing to be checked; simply brainstorm for the movie review that is due Monday

read/take notes on 8.3 (chapter 8 section 3)



HW due for Wednesday, Nov 4:

read the two worksheets distributed in class and answer ALL questions at the bottom of each (you can write your answers on the back of each worksheet) so you are reading and then answering 7 questions in total


HW due for Monday, Nov 2:

"Advice for Time Travelers!"

imagine you live in a future society and you know some time travelers who are taking a trip back to the Middle Ages.

in order to blend undetected into medieval life,  the travelers will assume the roles of a:

1. monarch
2. greater lord  (duke or count)
3. lesser lord  (vassal)
4. noblewoman
5. knight
6. peasant

write down careful instructions for each time traveler on how to act, what to expect,  how people will treat you, how you should treat people, etc. - just in general tell them what their life will be like in that role

should be roughly a page of advice - a few sentences of advice for each person

be helpful!  be specific!  use your textbook for information on the various roles in medieval society

study all of this for a quick quiz on section 3 tomorrow.  be familiar with that map and the different regions where Native American cultures thrived in North American around 1450 (Pacific Northwest, Eastern Woodlands, Southeast, etc - see page 170 in your book or the back of the magazine project handout)


HW due for Thursday, Oct 22:

the Native American magazine is due tomorrow.  you need to coordinate with your group and finalize any last details or sections of the magazine.

you will be given 5 minutes at the beginning of class to do a final assembly of the magazine if you need that time with your group.


HW for Wednesday, Oct 21:

continue to work on Native American magazine project  (print out pictures, braintorm ideas, work on the different sections/elements after coordinating responsibilities with your group partners); tomorrow we will only be in the classroom, NOT the computer lab - so bring in any materials you need to assemble and finalize your magazine.  the magazine project is due Thursday.

Chapter 4 test on Monday - homework is to study for test using class notes, homework notes, worksheets, the chapter overview study guide you got at the  beginning of the chapter and the textbook. 



HW due for Friday, Oct 2:

start to review and get organized for the Chapter 4 test scheduled for Monday, Oct 5- binder check on Friday so get all your homework, classwork and worksheets organized and begin to review them


HW due for Thursday, Oct 1:

outline your ideas for two essay questions (using formal Roman numeral outline format)

do not write out essay answers, just OUTLINE your ideas in this format
(I. topic (like "Great Wall" as a symbol")

here are the questions:

1. Why do you think the Great Wall became an important symbol to the Chinese people? (then and now)

also make sure you have some feedback to share about the presentations yesterday (you were supposed to write down notes yesterday after each presentation about strong points and areas we can work on as a group in terms of the info, design and presentation of each poster)


HW due Thursday, Sept 17:

read 4.1 (chapter 4 section 1) and take notes - you goal should always be to spend roughly 30 minutes on homework in this class; for this particular assignment, try to take at least a page or two of notes

as i mentioned in class, use the red headings and green subheadings as a framework/guide for your notes and then summarize main ideas in bullet point format as you read (summarize a paragraph in one bullet point, for example- what's the main idea? etc)



HW due for Wednesday, Sept 16:

finalize any 'at-home' work for poster project - finalize notes for poster presentation (notes on back), discuss who will say what with partner(s), practice


HW due for Tuesday, Sept 15:

work on poster project  (coordinate with group/partner to delegate responsibilities)

review the chapter you were assigned for the poster project


HW due Friday, Sept 11:

interview a parent or guardian at home and ask them about their experiences studying history - their favorite history classes, favorite history teachers, favorite history subjects...did they major in history in college? etc  
** write their answers down in your notebook/binder and be ready to discuss them in class

also, try to watch the news or look at a news web site tonight and notice the 9/11 coverage - come in ready to discuss any interesting new stories or articles you saw


HW due Thursday, Sept 10:

in full sentences on a labled, white-lined piece of paper, write out 5 or more academic and skill goals you have in this class for this year.

(for example, "In my World History I class this year, I would like to learn more about... or I would like to improve... or I would like to practice...")


HW due Wednesday, September 9:

review course expectations document with parent or guardian and complete signature page; bring signed page to class (and file course expectations sheet in binder)

also, cover your text book

both of these items will be checked and counted as your first HW assignment
