vocabulary words # 71 - 80  There will be a quiz on these words on Wednesday February 6, 2002.

71. irrefutable - cannot be disproved. People of faith see irrefutable proof of the hand of God at work.

72. jargon - specialized vocabulary. The jargon of sports writers is bright, sharp, and exciting.

73. judicious - wise, careful. Gary thought it judicious to say nothing to his parents about losing his allowance.

74. kindle - to ignite, to catch fire.  With the wind blowing so furiously, Ted found it difficult to kindle a fire.

75. labyrinth - a maze. Once inside the cave, the searchers were met with a labyrinth that made it difficult to find the exit.

76. lackluster - lacking brightness, dull. His lackluster response to our suggestions made us lose interest in the project.

77. laconic - using few words.  Harriet's laconic speech lasted only five minutes.

78. lassitude - weariness.  Lassitude comes from a feeling of hopelessness.

79. latent - lying hidden, undeveloped.  Marilyn's latent charm became visible after she read the beauty book.

80. laudable - worthy of praise. The board rewarded Ellen's laudable work by giving her a promotion and a raise.

61. amorphous - shapeless. Instead of resembling a layer cake, it looked like an amorphous blob of icing.

62. anarchy - state of disorder, lacking a government. After overthrowing the king, the island was thrown into a state of anarchy.

63. apathetic - indifferent, don't care. The fans were so apathetic they didn't even cheer for their team.

64. aphorism - short saying expressing a truth. Ben Franklin stated the aphorism, "A penny saved is a penny earned."

65. apparition - ghost. While doing his homework, he thought he saw an apparition of his old math teacher come back to haunt him.

66. approbation = approval. She looked for some sign of approbation from her parents for her great science project.

67. artifice = trick or deception. Saying I was going to the library was just an artifice to get out of the house.

68.assauage - ease, lessen. Paying me $10 will assuage the pain of cleaning my room.

69. assail - attack, assault. The crowd of reporters began to assail the President with questions.

70. atone - pay for, make up for.  He was sentenced to five years in prison to atone for his crimes.

51. enhance – improve, advance. Coloring  your project will enhance your grade.

52. onslaught – attack, assault. The movie star was not prepared for the onslaught of fans wanting his autograph.

53. perennial – year after year. The movie “Mary Poppins” is a perennial favorite among children. 

54.execute – carry out, put into effect. The coach made the team practice an extra hour so they could execute the plays.

55. facsimile – a copy.  Many museums will sell a facsimile of some famous artwork.

56.expertise – special skill or knowledge. Although she could play many sports, her real expertise is figure skating.

57. fiasco – total failure. When the rain drenched the floats, the parade turned into a fiasco.

58. feasible – practical, possible. The snowfall last night will make skiing feasible this weekend.

59.felon – person guilty of or convicted of a crime.  The police were able to capture the escaped felon and take him back to jail.

60. indigent - poverty stricken. Every Thanksgiving Mr. Smith  provides indigent families with gifts of turkeys.

41.objective - goal, aim, purpose.  The climber's objective
   was to reach the peak in two days.

42. entice - lure, attract. Supermarkets put candy at the
    checkout counter to entice you into buying some.

43. epitaph - words written in memory of a dead person.
    Long before he died, he wrote his own epitaph for his
    tombstone.

44. ordinance - law, decree, order.   Burning trash in town
    is a violation of the city ordinance.

45. parched - extremely dry. No rain had fallen on the
        parched area for months.

46.paraphrarse - restate in your own words.  The teacher
      asked him to paraphrase the plot of the story.

47. pensive - thoughtful with a hint of sadness.  The pensive young boy took one last look at his old home before they moved.

48. passive - not active. He took a passive role at the meeting, letting others make the decisions.

49. perimeter = outer boundary. They built a fence around
    the perimeter of the property.

50. zenith - highest point. At noon the sun is at its zenith.
