  1. What is the history of Latin music?
  2. What are some different types of latin music?
Latin music is a blend of spanish, portuguese, african, and carribean styles. When the spanish and portuguese conquistadores explored and eventually took over countries they brought with them their music styles. There styles were then mixed with the local styles and also with the styles from other groups within the country. Many latin countries share similar sounds and styles today. However each country has there own unique sound and variations. The variations are not only within the music but also in different dances. latin music has also changed over time because of new artists today. They mix the latin style with there own, wich has created popular latin music. Latina artists like Shakira, Selena (tejano rose), and Celia Cruz (queen of salsa) have been influencing latin music for a long time. Although there have been many different influences on latin music it still stays true to traditional beats and style.

Tejano and salsa. These are two of the latin music styles that i have researched. There are many other styles.....too many for me to research, so i picked these two. Tejano is not only a music style. It was originally a culture. A tejano is a mix of mexican and texan. After spain polish and other european setlers arrived bringing with them their music styles and instruments. Eventually tejano music was born. Original tejano music used an acordian and spanish bas guitar. Over time it was mixed with pop, R&B, and other styles. The acordian was later taken out of tejano due to the changes brought on by artists. Today, the acordian sound has been revived. Tejano is still made today. One well known tejano style singer was Selena. She used this style throughout her music. Now for salsa!!! The history of salsa is sort of confusing. It did not originate from one single place, but from many latin and african countries. Countries like puerto rico, the dominican, cuba, and a bunch of others have greatly influenced salsa music and dance. Each country has there own style of salsa but the beat remains pretty much the same throughout. Salsa was brought to New York by Puerto ricans and they used popular sound mixed with traditional beats to help gain popularity. An example of one salsa artist is Celia Cruz who has been making this type of music for many years.

That was the history now it is time to learn about the artists who produce these types of music. In my web site I focused on the female or latina artists. I researched latina artists like Selena, Shakira, and Celia Cruz. I chose these three artists to show how latina music has evolved. Celia Cruz is the oldest one.....she has been around for a long time and is still popular. Selena was also popular and remains popular even after her death. And lastly shakira who has just recently been discovered here in America although she too has been making music for a while. Each one of these artists uses a different latin style of music. Selena was and still is called the tejano rose. She used the tejano style in her music which became very popular here. She started her career at nine years of age. She was given the award for best tejano artist, as well as many other awards. She made five spanish albums and two english albums before her death. Even today her music lives on.....this tejano rose has never really died. Shakira. she is probably the newest latina artist out there today. She has made many spanish albums and has been famous in the latin community for years. She has just recently produced her first english album and is gaining popularity here in the United States. The oldest of these latina artists is Celia Cruz. She began making her music before the 1960's and continues to produce today. She started making her music before it was popular here in the states. She has made over fifty albums and has one over one hundered awards. She uses the salsa style in her  music and she mixes it with her own colorful style. She continues today making her music and says that she will continue this until the day she can no longer sing another note.

These artists and styles of latin music are only a few of the many out there today. The different styles gives countries their own unique sounds and dances. The thing that keeps them the same is that no matter what style or artist, when a latin song begins to play......people can't help but get up and dance.
