In our journey to discover what it means to be Hispanic, Latiino, Chicano, it is necessary to understand the beginnings of our cultural/ethnic groups. To do this, we have to start in 1492 with what has historically been called "The Discovery." But was it a 'discovery?' Hadn't there been vibrant and highly developed civilizations thriving on this continent before Columbus? How did all that change after "The Encounter?" How should we evaluate the legacy of Columbus and other explorers like him? Group Task: In pairs research the impact Columbus had on the development of this continent by: a. evaluating the global consequences of "The Encounter;" b. Identifying five areas of impact and appropriately evaluate each; c. analyzing the legacy from both the "New and Old World" perspective. d. identifying where you stand on this question. Use the links below to get you started on your research. You will need to develop your own bibliography of resources (5 additional resources) and include them in your report (2-3 pages, typed, single spaced, font size 12, double space between paragraphs) Due Day 1: An outline of what questions you will ask to guide your research and fulfill the task (Library) Due Day 2: A rough draft of your report to be typed in class on the Alpha Smarts. Due Day 3: A bibliography and further research on-line and/or using reference books / textbooks in the library. Due Day 4: Finish typing your report in class on the Alpha Smarts. On Tuesday, November 13, we will be in the computer lab, rm. 715, to create a propaganda poster on the celebration of Columbus Day - pro or con???
