SOCK  MONKEYS

This is an advanced-warning “heads-up”

On approximately October 26 we will begin to create and construct SOCK MONKEYS during our sewing unit in Personal and Family Development.  (Requirements for a second inexpensive sewing project will be given in the near future.)  Each student will individually be required to purchase supplies for this project and bring to class by October 26.   Students are given the option of purchasing classic “Red Heel” socks if they want their SOCK MONKEY to have the regular classic look or they may purchase striped or colored socks if they want a non-traditional look.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:
Each student will create an original unique SOCK MONKEY in class.  Students will name their SOCK MONKEY and dress or decorate it to give it an individual personality.   After completion, students will turn in a decorated 5”x7” note card (attached to the monkey) with the SOCK MONKEY’s name and a description of his or her personality.

SUPPIES NEEDED:

One pair of new socks-(they may be either RED HEEL socks*-medium/large size or
large women’s striped or multi colored socks)It does take both socks in the pair to complete one monkey Medium sizes may also be used but children’s sizes are not ok for a first sewing project.

Polyester fiberfill stuffing-one 16 oz bag will probably stuff 2 monkeys—you may share with a friend.  You do not have to buy a brand name. Walmart, Joanns or
Hobby Lobby are a good place to purchase stuffing.  Brand name examples: poly-fil costs about $2.57 for 16 oz—good quality, Cluster Stuff-costs about $3.00 for 16 oz—extra soft

One pair of approximately ½” buttons for eyes—black or dark brown sew-on buttons work best.  “ Googly” glue-on buttons do not work well.

**Basic sewing supplies: thread, sewing machine, pins, scissors and needles will be furnished by Mrs. Carter.

So where do I buy “Red Heel” Socks???  Hobby Lobby and sometimes Joann’s have a limited supply on hand.  Your best bet would be to go on-line. Google—Red Heel Socks or Socks for Sock Monkeys. They are listed in numerous sites.    Check more than one site to compare prices. Cost example: The Sock Company offers 2 pair packs for $8.29.

Let Mrs. Carter know if you have trouble locating these. Remember you do not have to specifically have Red Heel socks.
