Student Performance-Based Objective (SPBO)

Given the need to understand career paths and strategies for obtaining employment, the student will develop a career portfolio, by end of the 6th week of school.

LESSON MATERIALS

Student:
* PC with MS Word, Excel, and Internet
* Personal Assessment Worksheet
* Samples of resumes, cover letters, and certifications
* Samples of job applications

Instructor:
* PC with MS Word, Excel, and Internet
* Personal Assessment Worksheet
* Samples of resumes, cover letters, and certifications
* Sample job application
* Overhead Projector

STEP 1: INTRODUCTION (10%)
Interactively discuss with students what their understanding is of a resume, cover letter, and a career portfolio.

Next, lead into presentation.

STEP 2: PRESENTATION (25%)

1. Personal Assessment
   a) Purpose
   b) Discuss how to gather personal data and complete
       Personal Assessment Worksheet
2. Job Application
   a) Purpose
   b) Hardcopy (paper) Job Application
   c) On-line Job Application
3. Resume
   a) Purpose
   b) Functional Format
   c) Chronological Format
   d) Grammar
4. Cover Letter
   a) Purpose
   b) Format
   c) Elements (Opening, Main Body, & Closing)
   d) Grammar
5. Portfolio
   a) Purpose
   b) Certifications
   c) Licenses
   d) Samples of Work

STEP 3: APPLICATION/FEEDBACK (55%)

1. Have each student create a career portfolio with the   
    following:
   * Job Application
   * Resume
   * Cover Letter
   * Portfolio
2. Ensure all students are using correct grammar and format.
2. Give all students the opportunity to have their  
    questions answered.

STEP 4: TEST (10%)

The student did develop a career portfolio, by end of the 6th week of school.

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS:
Arrangements will be made for Individual Education Plans (IEP) and Individual Transition Plans (ITP) based upon accommodation needs.
