In Communications this month, students must read an autobiography. The autobiography cannot be about a sport's hero. We are currently reading Stone Fox. We will be doing a project on potato farms, and making a book about the Iditarod Race in the computer lab.
We will be reviewing hard for the writing test which will be given on March 6. You can help your child by telling stories and having them tell stories to you. Have your child think their story through first, discuss how they could have made their story more interesting, give suggestions of new, more vivid verbs that they could use.
I am currently trying to gather supplies to use with the next novel we will read. The novel is Mr. Poppers Penquins. I need a couple of boxes of salt, lots of baby food jars, dirt, several loaves of bread,different types of fabric scraps,and a couple of volunteers to help with one of the activities. If you can help with any of these, please do. The novel deals with Penquins and Antarctica. We take a Virtual Field Trip to Antarctica, we conduct experiments on freezing, preserving things, and develop an animal that can survive the harsh conditions of Antarctica.
Math - All students need to know their multiplication facts by heart. We have been working on this for a while now. Soon we will begin division and without knowing their facts this becomes an impossible task. Please drill your child each night. We will soon begin doing 12 minute drills in math to improve our computation skills. This is very important practice for the End of Grade Tests.
Fourth Grade Social Studies - We will soon begin working on a project for social studies which will be completed in the computer lab. Your child will be using either Power Point or Hyperstudio to present information on a particular subject. I will give you more information when the time comes closer.
Fifth grade Social Studies - The fifth graders will also do a computer project which will be a multimedia presentation on a particular region of the United States. Look for more information to come soon.
