Language Arts Our first reading theme is titled “Creative Imaginations.” It is a wonderful way to start the year, encouraging us to use our imaginations to make our world more exciting. Spelling concepts for this month are: Beginning "r" blends Beginning consonant blends Ending consonant blends "-ing" "-ang" "-ong" Red words will be sent home on Monday, please have your child show you how we arm tap. See if you and your family can come up with a fun new way to tap the words. Our grammar focus this month will be on nouns and verbs. In our multi-sensory program, nouns are "yellow" and verbs are "orange". When you read with your child, ask him/her to find nouns and verbs. Writing workshop this month will continue to focus on paragraphs. We will become realtors, trying to sell some "spooktacular" houses. Reading for Pumpkins has begun. Your child should be reading for at least 15 minutes every night. Record sheets are due every Friday.
Mathematics
We have begun Unit 2, Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers, in Math. This chapter introduces several important concepts including partial sums addition and regrouping in subtraction. Please help your child master these pivotal concepts by checking his/her homework nightly. Fact quizzes are given on Wednesdays. When you feel your child is ready to take a quiz, please send in a note to school. Social Studies In social studies, we continue to work on map skills. Students will practice using map symbols. We are also working on grid maps. Science We are wrapping up our 2nd Science chapter, “Changes in Matter”. Please look for examples of physical and chemical changes in your everyday life. We are about to begin our Technology and Engineering Unit, “Improving a Play Dough Process.” In this Unit, we will explore the jobs performed by chemical engineers. Then, we will use the Engineering Design Model to design and then improve “play dough”. If you have any of the following materials at home that you would like to donate, please send them to school with your child. salt “Play-Doh” flour extra measuring cups with ¼ cup demarcation
