Language Arts

We are working through our first Reading Street Unit, Dollars and Sense.  Please reinforce the unit's essential question, "When is money important and when does it affect our lives?" with your child at home.  The Family Times is an important resource to help support your child, please put it in an important spot.

Spelling tests will be given EVERY OTHER Friday.  On tested weeks, the spelling words will go home on Monday.

In Writing Workshop we are focusing on writing complete sentences.  This month we will begin to work on a personal narrative as well.

Reading for Pumpkins will continue through the month.  Your child should be reading nightly to help develop good reading habits.  Find a good book for yourself and snuggle up with him or her to read!

Mathematics

Most of you should be very familiar with our math program, Everyday Mathematics.  A family letter for Unit 1 was sent home.  It is a valuable resource for helping your child with his/her homework.  If you lost your family letter, you can follow the Everyday Math link below to print another one at home.

Soon, we will begin Unit 2, Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers, in Math.  This chapter introduces several important concepts including partial sums addition and regrouping in subtraction.  Please help your child master these pivotal concepts by checking his/her homework nightly.

Fact quizzes are given on Wednesdays.  When you feel your child is ready to take a quiz, please send in a note to school.

Social Studies

Our first Social Studies unit will focus on map skills.  We will be reviewing directions, using and exploring different types of maps, and even learning a special “direction” dance.  Make sure you have your child show you how we do our dance.  Who knows? You might even want to join in!!!

Science

In science, the children will become young scientists.  We will start the year by learning about the scientific method and using inquiry skills to make exciting discoveries. We just had two very important visitors from the German Institute, Professor von Macklinstein and Professor von Joymeier, help us with our first science lab.

Our first science chapter will focus on properties of matter.
