Welcome to Mrs. Joy and Miss Macklin's Web page!!! Spring has sprung! We look forward to warmer days and the blossoming of our little "flowers" into four grade-ready students! Happy Birthday in April to Olivia F. in Mrs Joy's room and to Matthew in Miss Macklin's room. Report cards go home April 10th. Language Arts We are wrapping up our fourth reading theme, "Folk Tales" and we will soon be starting a new theme entitled "Taking Care of the Earth." The stories in this theme will help students to understand how their actions affect can affect our world. This unit includes a nonfiction story about the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Please share your memories of that day with your child. Do you remember where you were when you heard the news? Our spelling concepts for the month will be: ge/dge aw/au/a We will continue to "pretest" the students on each week's concept. Mathematics This month our main focus is on fractions. Students will practice using fractions to name equal parts of an object or a group. Additionally, they will learn to generate equivalent fractions for 1/2s, 1/3s, and 1/4s. Pizza anyone? Please look for real-life examples of fractions in your everyday world such as: We ate 5/8 of the pizza for dinner. How many 8ths remain? Multiplication Quizzes are given every Wednesday. Children progress at their own rates through each table. Nightly fact practice is the ONLY way to guarantee mastery. Addition and subtraction facts will be assessed periodically for the remainder of the year. Remember to use our web sites below for fun ways to practice. Social Studies Now that the dust has settled from the Revolutionary War, we have begun to learn about the Southeast Region of the United States. This unit is one of our favorites to teach because the students become so engaged in its content. We star this unit with an in-depth look at the geography of the Southeast. Next, we will look at life on a Southern Plantation. Finally, we will learn all about the Underground Railroad. Your child will learn about the brave men and women who traveled on the Railroad, as well as the many secrets and codes that made it such a success! Science We continue to study space, focusing on the sun and the planets. We are learning about our closest and most important star, our sun. Please reinforce the vocabulary rotation and revolution at home as they are tricky concepts to understand. Since NASA is CONSTANTLY finding new objects in space, be share to share any news articles with your child about this fascinating subject.
