The ABC’s of Mrs. Blackmon’s Kindergarten Class

A Allergies- If your child has any allergies, please let me know.  There will often be cooking and food in our classroom and I will be sure to adapt to any needs of your child, but can only do so if I know what those needs may be.
Attendance- It is imperative that your child attend school every day.  If you are aware of a situation that will result in absences, please speak with me and I will try to give you materials to keep your child up to speed with the class.  Keep in mind however that we do use several books in this class and some of the learning will be impossible to get outside of the lessons presented here at school.

B Book Orders- I will do book orders monthly; I hope you take advantage of this opportunity to by wonderful children’s books inexpensively.
Breakfast- This is offered by the cafeteria every morning.
“Bee”havior- We will be using a stoplight method of behavior management.  Every Friday your child will bring home their weekly behavior chart.  If they have a sticker, it means they stayed on green and had no behavior issues.  If they have a straight face, it means they moved to yellow (minor behavior issue).  If they have a frowny face, it means they moved to red and had a major behavior issue.  Moving to red more than once or twice is unacceptable and will result in a daily behavior plan or other interventions.  Good behavior is essential to good learning and the children will be expected to follow the rules at all times.  Please reinforce this system at home.

C Communication- Never hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.  My email is lblackmon@ycsd.york.va.us.
Computers- There are 4 computers in our classroom.  In addition, we have an hour block every week with the computer lab where we learn new games and skills.
Calendar- I will send home a hard copy each month.  In addition, I regularly update the calendar on our Quia webpage, so you can always check here to find out what the latest events and activities are.

D Dismissal- We dismiss at 3:26.  Parent’s wishing to pick up their children can sign them out in the office and meet us at the front of the school.  Please be here promptly at 3:26!

E Email- I will be creating a distribution list for all the parents in our class.  This will be our main method of communication.  Please check your email daily and allow 24 hours for me to respond.  This is my preferred way of communication.

F Fire Drills-We have these once a week in September and then once a month for the rest of the year.  Please prepare your child for these by talking about them at home.
Field Trips-We will take several this year.  Please return the form signed and with the money as soon as possible.
Folders- We have orange daily folders that will need to be checked EVERY night and returned every morning.  This is how the children will bring home their daily work, field trip notices, monthly calendars, letters from the school, etc.  Please check these and clean out the folders nightly.  This is where you can send in bus notes, lunch money (in an envelope marked with their number), etc.
Free Choice-This is the children’s center or free time at the end of the day.  They can choose to play with any number of different games, puzzles, activities throughout the room.

G Guidance- Students will have a guidance class with Ms. Goodwin or Ms. Coates once a month.  They will discuss feelings, playing nice, making friends, etc.  If you ever wish to speak with a counselor or have your child receive more guidance, please let us know.

H Homework- Homework will be given every night except for Friday.  All homework will come home in your child’s yellow homework folder and should be completed and returned to school on Friday.  The homework will also include a book in a bag, beginning in early October.  Directions will be included in the bag.
Happy Birthday!- For your child’s birthday, you are welcome to come in and bring a treat for the class.  Please come during either lunch or snack time.

I Illness - If your child is sick with a fever or throwing up, please keep them out of school until they are fever or throw up free for 24 hours.  When they do return, please send a note for our records.
Intruder Drill- We will have an intruder drill within the first few months of school.  We explain to the children that this is a drill where we lock the door and close the blinds so nobody can see us in our room.  We stay very quiet while Mr. Carter tries to “get us”.  Although this is a serious drill to practice, we try to make it as light as possible for the children.

J Journals- We will do journal writing activities daily.  This will be a wonderful way to see your child’s progress throughout the year.

K Keep me informed- Please let me know if anything has changed in your child’s routine that may affect academics or behavior.

L Lunch- Lunch is $2.00 and is offered every day.  Please check the calendar from Aramark to see what is being served.

M Money- Please send all money to school in a plastic bag or envelope labeled with your child’s name and the reason for the money.  If it is lunch money, you must write your child’s student number on it.  Please try to send in lunch money on a weekly or monthly basis (checks can be made out to DES); this cuts down on back ups in the cafeteria.

N Newsletter- I will post a weekly newsletter on Quia Friday afternoons.  Please check it for upcoming events.  I will also email this out.  Again, you are responsible for checking your email to receive this information.
Nurse- Mrs. Frasier is the school nurse.  She can administer medicine to your child if the proper forms are on file.  She will also check them out if they are feeling ill.
No Toys!- Please do not allow your child to bring any toys to school.  Check their bookbags often because they tend to find their way in there.

O Outside- We will go outside daily for recess.  Please make sure that your child has the proper outdoor clothing.  Children must wear tennis shoes daily!

P PTA- This wonderful group does so many good deeds for our school.  I hope you   all participate and support this organization.
Parent Involvement- We need your help and support a great deal.  Look for notes on Quia and in our weekly newsletter about this.
Parties- We have lots to celebrate in kindergarten!  Please try to come help out and enjoy these celebrations throughout the year.

Q Quia- This is our class website.  Lots of information will be available here.  Please check it often.  http://www.quia.com/pages/lindseyblackmon.html

R Report Cards- These will go home once every nine weeks.  You are welcome to
conference with me after you receive it if you have anything you wish to discuss or learn more about.
Read!!- Read every day with your child!  This is the best thing you can do to get your child reading.
Rules- We have school rules and classroom rules that the children will be expected to follow.  Please reinforce these at home.
Restrooms- We will take class restroom breaks using the hall bathrooms every day.  In addition, the students are always allowed to get up and use the restroom in the classroom, unless this becomes a problem.
Rooms- We will be moving into a new classroom after school starts.  We will inform you more about this as it happens.

S Snack- Each teacher does snack differently, but in our classroom, each child will need to bring in snack for the month at the beginning of each month. I will put a reminder on the monthly calendar.  They must be individually wrapped snacks so as to reduce any issues with bugs in our classroom.  This will ensure that every child has snack every day.  You child will not eat the snack that you sent in for the month, but will instead have the option of any snack that any student has brought.  Some examples that we have found the children enjoy are Cheese Its, Fruit Snacks/Fruit Roll Ups, Goldfish, Applesauce/Pudding (please send in plastic spoons!).  The children last year were not big fans of Nabs or 100 calorie packs.
Show & Tell- We may do this occasionally, please look on the monthly calendar.

T Tennis Shoes- If you wish to send your child to school in other shoes, they will need to have tennis shoes available to change into for recess or PE.
Tardies- Please try to get your child to school on time.  If they are tardy, they will need to report to the office and it will be documented.
Tasting- Tasting will be held every Friday at 2:00.  Parents will sign up to bring food(s) that represent different letters of the alphabet.  For example, you could bring the food to make Ants on a Log, Apples, or Alphabet Cereal for A.  There are many wonderful websites online for creative ideas.

U Units and Themes- These themes will be posted on the monthly calendar and in
the newsletter.

V Visitors- Visitors are welcome during lunch time.  Other times of the day, you may not be able to see your child as we may be in the middle of a lesson.  At any time when you want to visit, you must go by the office first and sign in.

W Welcome to Kindergarten- We know this is a scary and exciting time for you
and your child.  Please let us know if there’s anything we can do to help!

day of school.  Put them in a gallon sized Ziplock and label with your child’s name.  These will stay in the clinic for emergencies.

Y You!- You are your child’s first teacher!  Please stay involved and ask questions
about anything!

Z Zippity Doo Dah- There’s nothing left to say!
