Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School 7th-Grade Lit. Skills
http://www.op97.org

Welcome 7-1 students and parents to Mrs. Fahey's Lit. Skills webpage, where you can view daily our class activities and homework assignments. This site will also keep you posted on team and class projects. Often you will be able to download and print handouts from class during an absence, which will help you keep current.

During the first trimester we will study and apply literacy strategies including making predictions and connections, summarizing, visualizing, questioning, and evaluating.
Vocabulary study includes a weekly packet focusing on a single Greek or Latin root
as well as focus words essential for understanding the class stories, novels, and nonfiction
articles. Our first unit of study will be "Seventh-Grade Snapshots."  Within this unit, we study novel excerpts, short stories, and personal essays which reflect the triumphs and pitfalls of life in the seventh grade. Our second unit will focus on Freak the Mighty, a novel on friendship
by Phil Rodrick.

Students are required to have a labeled single-subject spiral and a two-pocket travel folder each day in class.  Also, on Mondays and Fridays students participate in silent reading and must carry a self-selected fiction or nonfiction book on these days.  On weeknights and weekends students should be reading their AR book at least 20 minutes per night.  There is
a weekly weekend response sheet which requires a parent signature.

Each week you will find the daily assignments listed here. Please scroll until you locate today's date. The activities and assignments listed should include any changes from the weekly logbook assignments. The current weekly assignments will appear first. Assignments for the previous week will follow for those who were absent or behind in class work.

This Week's Homework:

Monday, December 1: Students read AR books silently thr;oughout the period.
At-Home Reading logs were submitted to the bin. Students took AR tests over Johnny Tremain and My Brother Sam as they finished the novels.

Tuesday, December 2: The Brother Sam group worked on the final open book exam for the novel.  They have until Thursday to complete it.
The Johnny Tremain readers worked in pods to create top ten lists for the novel--top 10 characters, settings, objects, and events.
Homework: Students in both groups should review novel characters, dates, and major events for open book final test on Wednesday and Thursday. The bookmark with differences and similarities between today's life style and that of the 1770's is due on Thursday. It requires minimum of 25 differences and 10 similarities with page numbers where facts were found.
