> In our reading anthology this week we will read the story "My River," a story that teaches that all animals depend on each other to share the river habitat. In word study we will begin the study of "magic e" words. On Monday we made "Magic e wands" and learned how the e at the end of a word changes the vowel to say "its own name." We will be studying these patterns as word families for the next three weeks. Each day we will study different word families with the long vowel, silent e pattern. Red words to date are the, of, and,a, to, is, you, that, for, was, are, as,his, this,I, from, have. Children are responsible for spelling these words as well as reading them. This week's words are by and or. In mathematics we begin unit 4. Unit 4 will feature standard and non-standard measurement, finding sums, calculating values of coin combinations, solving addition and subtraction problems, and introducing times of quarter past and quarter of. If math homework is unclear to you or your child, simply jot me a note. Do keep those letters that come at the beginning of each unit. They explain the concepts and EVEN give you the answers to each night's homework! One on one practice and help in math is such a great help to your child. Everyday Mathematics is a rigorous program! Even after six years of teaching it, we first grade teachers often marvel at just how tough it can be. But we are also still amazed at how much richer students' math knowledge and number sense is at the end of the year.
Of course it is a VERY exciting time of the year for first graders. It is great fun to teach young children during the holidays - their excitement is contagious! Do try to keep them well rested and as healthy as possible in the next few weeks. We will be doing lots of fun holiday projects tied to the curriculum.
