This Quia page is available on-line at the Northwest Heights internet site. Each week the site will provide information about current and up-coming events, homework assignments, and the spelling word list. Welcome to our class page! I hope the information below is helpful. This class page will be updated each week. This is an important avenue for communication between school and home. I also use it to help you be more informed about each week's learning experiences in our classroom. Notice that it contains information for each subject area. This should assist you in making your "work at home" easier and more meaningful. You will also find games your child can learn to play independently that enhance spelling and math fact mastery. Please make me aware of ways I might make this page even more helpful to you. Each week we will focus on a school-wide word relating to our GREAT EXPECTATIONS program. Periodically ask your child to share the word-of-the-week and it's definition with you. Newsletter for the Week of: December 7-11 PLEASE REMEMBER TO PURCHASE A SWEATSHIRT FOR YOUR CHILD SO HE/SHE WILL HAVE ONE TO PAINT. IF IT WILL BE A HARDSHIP FOR YOU TO BUY ONE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I WILL SEE WHAT I CAN DO ABOUT GETTING ONE. SEND IT TO SCHOOL ASAP. WE WILL BE PAINTING THEM ON THURSDAY. Our class Christmas party will be on Thursday, Dec. 17 from 1:30 to 2:30. Students need to bring a wrapped book or activity book for our gift exchange. The book SHOULD NOT exceed $5. Boys need to bring a book appropriate for a boy and girls need to bring a book appropriate for a girl. If you would like to bring or send something for the party, please return the note sent home with your child today. PHONICS: I teach phonics using the Saxon Phonics Program. This program teaches children the phonics and spelling rules as well as how to decode unfamiliar words. Look over the worksheets your child brings home so that you are familiar with what they are doing in class. This week we will be learning suffixes ly, let, en, ish, and ist. We will also be learning trigraphs igh and tch. There is no assessment this week. READING: Your child is bringing home a paperback story (Great Sunday Sleigh Rides) to read aloud to you each evening this week. After he/she reads it to you, please ask them questions about the story to help make sure that they are comprehending what they've read. We are checking out books from the library and I want them reading several pages each night aloud. We really focus on reading fluency and comprehension in the 2nd grade. They need to be able to read aloud at a steady pace as well as be able to answer questions about what they've just read. SPELLING: This week's spelling list has been sent home with your child. I also type them here so that if the list is misplaced or forgotten, you can get one from my web page. The list this week is made up of words with the suffixes er and est. We will have a trial test over these words on Thursday. If a student makes a 100 on the trial test, he/she will not have to take the test on Friday. PLEASE help your child study these words each week. We have so much to do here at school that we can't spend much time on it, so most of the studying will have to be done at home. This week's list is as follows: sooner fatter soonest fattest hotter angrier hottest angriest busier straighter busiest straightest happier there happiest their smaller Christmas smallest December BONUS WORD: Santa Claus LANGUAGE/HANDWRITING: In Language, we will focus on present and past-tense verbs. MATH: Our math work involves mastering various math skills as well as mastering the addition facts through 9 + 9 to an automatic recall level. Students will be given timed fact sheets to check their progress. It is VERY IMPORTANT that the children practice these facts at home. Concepts for this week's lessons will be: Creating and reading a bar graph and ordering two-digit numbers. There will be an assessment on Wednesday. SCIENCE: We will be studying the growth cycle of a seed which goes along with our reading story this week. SOCIAL STUDIES: We will be learning about Christmas around the world and how this special holiday is celebrated in other countries. I do have a small "Wish List" if you would like to provide one of these items during the school year: antibacterial wipes, snacks, washable markers (boxes of 8 or 10), small items for the treasure chest, and candy (for accelerated reader awards). Thank you for taking the time to touch base with our CLASS PAGE. It makes a great difference for your child when you are involved daily with his/her learning!!! Remember there is "work at home" daily in Reading and Spelling and please remember to review all daily papers. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me here at school or feel free to call me at home. Mrs. Olson
