Welcome back to fabulous new semester in Lake Ridge Music! HAPPY NEW YEAR, 2012!!

The year is continuing to move along smoothly. See below for information of upcoming events.

Recorders in the Classroom...Fourth and Fifth grade students will continue the skills they began developing last year on the soprano recorder. Third grade ("FINALLY!", as one of my students said earlier) will begin instruction on the soprano recorder. Ordering information will be coming home within the next few weeks. WE WILL START RECORDERS AFTER THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY BREAK. BE LOOKING FOR INFORMATION LETTER COMING SOON.

The Lake Ridge Singers and Rhythm on the Ridge will continue with rehearsals in the second semester. We have 2 wonderful groups of Lake Ridge Musicians who are so dedicated that they come to rehearsals at 7:45 (AM!) on their designated days! You will have an opportunity to hear their Spring Performance at the May 15 PTA meeting. There are 2 NEW items for these groups in the new semester--(1) Rhythm on the Ridge and the Lake Ridge Singers will give their FIRST, ever,  joint performance with the musical "DRUM, a Tale of Generosity" and (2) Due to the new grade realignment scheduled for SY 2012-2013 we will not have any experienced drummers and singers to act as leaders next year; therefore, Third Grade students are being invited to join either or both performance organizations. Parents, look for an information letter/performance contract to be coming home during the week of January 4-6...

FYI...Rhythm on the Ridge rehearses on M-W-F/7:45-8:10 and Lake Ridge Singers rehearse on T-Th/7:45-8:10. Remember, "If you are on time, you are late." Don't know what this means? Ask a member of either group!

Grade level PTA performances will began with the October 11 meeting. The three performances given in October, November and December by our 3rd, 4th, 5th and Multiage students were phenomenal! I couldn't be more proud of each of these groups of students. Each grade level (PreK-5) has an opportunity to perform each year. The PTA business meeting begin at 6:30 pm, with the grade-level performance immediately following. We look forward to performances from our 1st, 2nd, Kindergarten and Preschool students beginning in February.

You will remember that third grade performed with 4th and 5th this year (two each). Due to scheduling needs Mrs. Smith's and Ms. Lamb's classes are in the 12:45-1:45 block with 4th grade and Mr. Pugh's and Ms. Tucker's classes are in the 1:45-2:45 block with 5th grade. In order to interrupt the academic schedule as little as possible we tried these inter-grade performance groupings and they were a tremendous success! A tentative list of the remaining performances is seen below. This list is subject to change if the need arises.

FEBRUARY...1st and 2nd grade--"I Have a Dream" (This is another opportunity for an inter-grade performance. These classes are in the same planning block so will make better use of time).

MARCH...Kindergarten--"The Little Red Hen"

APRIL...PreSchool--TBA

MAY...joint performance of Lake Ridge Singers and Rhythm on the Ridge--"The Drum" a mini-musical based on a Tale of Generosity

A letter of participation is sent home to parents and/or guardians at least 6 weeks before a scheduled performance. It is very IMPORTANT that these letters be returned as soon as possible so that speaking parts and/or singing solos can be assigned. There is a "mail box" outside the music room door for your child's convenience in returning his/her letter. I encourage each student to take on this RESPONSIBILITY rather than asking the classroom teacher to collect the letters. They have enough paperwork to deal with without adding mine to the pile! Thank you for YOUR help and encouragement to the students as well.

There are several other special events that will take place in the second semester:

EXTRA...EXTRA...READ ALL ABOUT IT!! Parents, Early last Fall I received a letter from the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. The KSO, in conjunction with the Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Greeneville, TN, will be presenting a Young People's Concert entitled "Got Rhythm". This concert will take place on Thursday, March 15 at 9:30 and 11:00. Unfortunately, this date falls during our Spring Break, so I cannot take students for an educational field experience; however, YOU can. If you are looking for fun activities for a "stay-cation" then I can certainly recommend attending this concert! The featured repertoire will include: Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm", Pachelbel's "Canon", "Quadrille" from Offenbach's Gaite Parisienne, Beethoven's Fidelio Overture, Leroy Anderson's "Syncopated Clock", "The Blue Danube" by Strauss, Ravel's "Bolero", the Final Dance (Jota) from de Falla's Three-Cornered Hat and "March" from John William's score to Raider's of the Lost Ark. For ticket information call (865) 521-2302. Tell your name, the number of adults/number of children and that you are representing Lake Ridge Elementary. Seats will then be available for you.

I look forward to meeting our New Lake Ridge families and reconnecting with those families who have been with us for a while. If you ever have any questions about what happens in music do not hesitate to ask. You can call me at 610-6030, ext. 3024, or e-mail at baldwinl@jcschools.org.

Keep a song in your heart!
