TO READING RECOVERY AT GES!
WHAT IS READING RECOVERY?
The Reading Recovery Program is supported by Title I in Washington County and is offered to students in first grade who have not yet reached their expected reading level. Individual 30 minute lessons are held every day in addition to the regular reading class during the school day. These lessons are designed to strengthen a student's reading and writing skills quickly.
In addition to the 30 minute individual lessons, I also offer small literacy group instruction for those students who might need a little extra help with reading, writing and phonics. These lessons are offered through Title I and are in addition to the regular classroom reading and writing instruction.
ONE-ON-ONE READING SESSIONS
During our 30 minute one-on-one sessions, we focus on an accelerated learning approach in reading and writing so that students may quickly catch up to their peers. These lessons are specifically set up to meet the needs of the individual student so that they will get the optimum learning experience. A typical Reading Recovery Lesson looks like this:
* Student reads 2-3 familiar books
* Student reads new book from yesterday while teacher takes a running record
* Student and teacher work on letters
* Student and teacher work on words
* Story is composed in student's journal
* Cut-up sentence
* New book intro and student's first reading of book
LITERACY GROUPS
Our groups meet everyday for a half-hour each day. During this time, we focus on enhancing our skills in reading, phonics, comprehension, and writing.
**HOMEWORK FOR ALL GROUPS**
Please make sure your child reads their book 2 times each night.
FLEXIBLE GROUP
1.) Each day, the story to be read will have the date written beside it in your child's flexible group folder.
2.) Please review the vocabulary words for the assigned story every night. Also study the assigned popcorn & Dolch words, phonics sounds and phrasing segments for that night.
3.) Please have your child read the assigned story. Your child really needs to be reading these stories fluently, so sometimes they may need to read the assigned story more than once a night.
4.) Please sign the story log and vocabulary list page every night.
5.) There is NO homework on Fridays!! :)
