THIS WEEK'S LESSON IS DEPRESSING.. OOPS, I MEAN DEPRESSION!
Schedule of Class Events
Monday
Class exercise #1: In response to a photo, within 5 minutes,write the signs of depression as you currently know them. These will be collected in class.
Individual activity #1: Access on Internet: quia.com/pages/macmentalhealth.html and using the hyperlink provided, practice memorizing terminology, definitions, and signs and symptoms of depression. Do this in class for 15 minutes.
Individual activity #2: Search the National Institute of Mental Health on the Internet. Using the hyperlink provided on Quia Web page, answer the list of questions provided in class. Focus your search within the booklets titled "Depression", "Depression in Children and Adolescents", and "Stories of Depression". Turn in completed questionaire before leaving class or e-mail to instructor.
Individual activity #3: Explore the publications available from the NIMH. Select any brochure, booklet, or factsheet on a topic concerning depression and print the brochure. (If you are doing this from home, I highly reccommend selecting one of the shorter brochures in order to avoid a lengthy printing time.)
Individual Review of Class exercise #1: Before you leave class, get your first exercise with the photo. Correct the signs of depression you originally wrote and add any new signs you have learned. Keep in your notebook.
Prepare for Next Class Session on Friday
Individual activity #3: Outside of class and using the brochure you have printed, share it with someone who is not in nursing. Discuss it together. Finally, write a summary of this discussion (no more than 2 pages). Bring to class on Friday and be prepared to share in a group discussion.
Read Chapter 13 "Depressive Mood Disorders" pp. 132-147.
Friday Group Discussion Share summaries of discussions with others using NIMH brochures. Aproximately 45 minutes.
Friday Lecture: "Treatment of Depression. Medications and Talk Therapy", S. McEwan. 45 minutes.
Individual activity #1: Select a medication from lecture. Reseach on Internet site www.DrugGuide.com or use Pharmacology or Drug Text. Write 4 nursing interventions specific to that drug therapy. Be prepared to share in class discussion.
