Requirements for The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

Use your Cherlin textbook and lecture notes to discuss the following sociological concepts.  Illustrate the concepts with examples from the book. Your book report should be approximately 10 pages in length.

A Racial-ethnic group is a group of people who share a common identity and whose members think of themselves as distinct from others by virtue of ancestry, culture and sometimes physical characteristics.  Often racial-ethnic group members' shared identity is reinforced by the way they are treated by outsider.  Discuss "Those who Don't" from this perspective.

Social stratification. In class, I explained that systems of inequality or social stratification often intersect along race, gender and social classes.  Illustrate and discuss the intersection of any of these two systems of inequality. Provide 3 examples.

In class, we discussed chain migration as a way that immigrant families adapt to their new culture.  Cherlin talks about "transnational families." Use "Geraldo No Last Name" to illustrate the concepts.

Gender and male domination  (Cherlin pp. 95-96) Men exercise power over women in ways that are similar to how the wealth exercise power over the poor. Cisneros stories illustrate this form of social stratification. Illustrate and discuss this concept using three  examples from Cisneros' stories.

Domestic violence is violent acts between family members or between women and men in intimate or dating relationships. Illustrate and discuss this phenomenon with three examples from the stories.

The House on Mango Street provides many illustrations of the impact of class on family.  Illustrate the concept of class with at least three examples from the stories.

What images abound regarding family (Family as a Haven, Family as Fulfillment, Family as Encumbrance) What is the importance of family in the novella?  How do these relationships both hinder and enable Esperanza's development?

Why is the idea of a home so important to Esperanza? She discusses at least three different houses; describe these houses from a sociological perspective.

The role of women "doing" kinship is discussed in many of the stories.  Discuss and illustrate this idea with at least two examples.

Gender segregation - Males and females worlds are often highly segregated, even in the same family.  Use "Boys and Girls" to illustrate this concept.

"Our Good Day" illustrates the concept of created kinship networks. Discuss the concept.

Why does Cisneros dedicate her book to "Las Mujeres?"
