"Catholic Schools are Schools for Life" 2008 National Blue Ribbon High School On Tuesday, September 9, 2008 we were named a Blue Ribbon School. For this year, only 3 private high schools were named to the list. We are especially proud to be named to this list as part of the Chicago Archdiocese which for the last two years has had the most schools of all the dioceses in the United States named Blue Ribbon Schools. Calendar 10/6: Parents' Club Meeting 10/10: Parents' Club Housewalk 10/13: Columbus Day (No school) 10/15: TESTING DAY (no school for seniors) 10/17: Homecoming Game 10/18: Homecoming Dance TEST DAY -- Wednesday, October 15 On October 15, we will administer the Explore (Freshmen), the PLAN (Sophomores), and the PSAT (Juniors) as part of our all school testing program. As you are aware the Explore and PLAN tests are a pre-ACT tests and the PSAT is a pre-SAT tests. The majority of our students will eventually only take the ACT for college admissions in their junior year. Only about a third of our students actually take the SAT. The benefit of having all our juniors take the PSAT is twofold for students. First they gain more experience taking these types of tests and secondly, occasionally students/ parents will discover that a student scores higher on the PSAT than the PLAN/Explore tests. In these instances it is recommend by the counselors that the student consider taking the SAT in addition to the ACT. These tests are extremely important to the school and to students. As a school we use these tests to monitor the success of our curriculum and make adjustments based on student performance. All research indicates that student can improve ACT/SAT scores by taking practice tests. Students and parents can also discover student areas of weakness on these tests and seek remediation prior to the ACT / SAT testing. In addition, the Explore and PLAN provide valuable information about career planning. Please insist that your student attend testing day and that they take this testing seriously. HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES As we approach homecoming week, I want to encourage parents to network together to help our students have a safe experience. Mrs. Francis and the Student Council has planned many fun and entertaining activities for this special week. Please be cautious of activities that your student may present as “school sanctioned activities”. Any activities sanctioned by the school always have faculty supervision. For example, “movie night” is a sanctioned activity; a powder puff game is not. Networking with our parents can help to keep activities safe and within a reasonable cost. Remember all the dances yet to come in your child’s life. Please consider coming out to support the various Athletic competitions during this week. Saint Viator Day Mass Celebration, October 22, 2008 We will celebrate the feast day of our patron, Saint Viator, on Wednesday, October 22. After mass we will continue our celebration of our blue ribbon status.
