Dear Bear Hall 7th graders and parents,

This third quarter finds us studying biology in science. We have begun our studies by learning the characteristics of all living things, how cells organize to make an organism, and the various organ systems of the human body.
Standards:
SPI 7.1.2 Interpret a chart to explain the integrated relationships that exist among cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.
SPI 7.1.3 Explain the basic functions of a major organ system.

In our second unit, we will be looking at the cells themselves. We will learn cell classification, the different structures within cells and their functions, and the difference between plant and animal cells. This is usually a very popular unit!
SPI 7.1.1 Identify and describe the function of the major plant and animal cell organelles.

In our third unit, we will learn how materials transfer in and out of cells.
SPI 7.1.5 Explain how materials move through simple diffusion.

These units will be followed by units that include photosynthesis and respiration, the carbon cycle, how organisms obtain oxygen, flowers and plant reproduction, mitosis, and basic genetics.
SPI 7.1.4 Sequence a series of diagrams that depict chromosome movement during plant cell division.
SPI 7.3.1 Compare the chemical compounds that make up the reactants and products of photosynthesis and respiration.
SPI 7.3.2.Interpret a diagram to explain how oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between living things and the environment.
SPI 7.4.1 Classify methods of reproduction as sexual or asexual
SPI 7.4.2 Match flower parts with their reproductive functions.
SPI 7.4.3 Describe the relationship among genes, chromosomes, and inherited traits.
SPI 7.4.4 Interpret a Punnett square to predict possible genetic combinations passed from parents to offspring during sexual reproduction

We will be taking our third science benchmark test after we return from Spring Break.

In social studies this third quarter, we will study population statistics, culture, diversiity, and the 5 major world religions.
Standards:
SPI 7.2.3, 7.3.8 define demographic concepts (i.e. population, population distribution, population density, growth rate, family size, and infant mortality)
SPI 7.3.21 Interpret a population pyramid
SPI 7.1.1 recognize cultural definitions (i.e. languages, religion, customs, political system, economic system)
SPI 7.3.16 demonstate understanding of characteristics and implications of a diverse global culture.
SPI 7.6.1 Identify ways family, groups, and community influence daily life and personal choices
SPI 7.1.3 compare and contrast the tenets of the five major world religions (i.e. Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and Judaism)

These are some of my favorite social studies topics! In college, I studied world cultures and anthropology. I think you will probably enjoy this unit, too! We will be taking the third social studies benchmark test sometime around the end of the quarter.

Every 7th grade student is required to do a science fair project this year. The projects will be due on Tuesday, March 27th and our Indian Trail Science Fair will be on Wednesday, March 28th.
