Dear Parents,
In 1st grade this year, our theme is Foundations.  We will start with the study of the Human Body or as I like to call it – Brain Surgery for First Graders.  Later in the year we will take a Tour of the World through Literature.  This unit will feature geography, fairytales from around the world, languages and culture.  1st grade will meet on Mondays.
In 2nd grade this year, our theme is Change.  We will start the year building a time machine which will take us back in time to the Ancient Cultures of Greece, Rome, Egypt and Mesoamerica.  We will study the likenesses and differences of the ancient cultures and their influences on our modern society.  Later in the year we will write poetry.  2nd grade will meet on Thursdays.
In 3rd grade this year, our theme is Systems.  We will start with an Invention unit that teaches students how to think creatively. Then in October we will begin our study of the National Park System of the United States. Each student will pick a park to become an expert on its history, natural features, highlights, wildlife, plants, recreation and accommodations, weather, safety, and facing the future. Students will set up a ranger station in the Commons and they will communicate and interpret their knowledge of their park to visitors on Ranger Day in March. In our last 3rd grade unit, we will learn about robotics and the systems it takes to design a machine to do work.  3rd grade will meet on Tuesdays.
The theme for 4th grade is Perspective.  Our first unit is Through Artist's Eyes, a perspective on art history throughout the centuries. After Christmas 4th graders will research the Gold Rush and how it influenced westward migration and first gold rush right here in North Georgia Mountains.  We will take our field trip to Wahsega where we study the Georgia mountain ecology. 4th grade will meet on Fridays.
Our theme for 5th grade is Interdependence.   5th graders will study how knowledge is linked.  Our first unit will be: How to Make Money and The Stock Market Game.  We will learn about the economy and personal economics.  Later in the year, we will study the Renaissance and the plays of William Shakespeare.  Then we will participate in the Jason Project.  5th grade will meet on Wednesdays.
