FEBRUARY AND MARCH SPANISH CLASSES

Students in fourth grade have been learning the days of the week, talking about going places, talking about doing different activities on different days of the week, using the calendar and the differences in the Spanish calendar, and learning about the activities of children in Spanish speaking countries.

Culturally, we have learned a song called: "Los dias de la semana son siete." Students also know how to express their birthdates in Spanish.

Here is the vocabulary that students need to know for this unit:

¿Cuáles son los días de la semana? (KWAH-LAYS SEWN LOHS DEEAS DAY LAH SAY- MAH- NAH)
What are the days of the week?

¿Qué día es hoy? (KAY DEE AH ES OY) = What day is today?

¿Cuál es la fecha? (KWAL EHS LA FAY-CHAH) = What is the date?

*notice the days of the week in Spanish are never capitalized

lunes (LOO NAYS)= Monday

martes (MAR TAYS)= Tuesday

miércoles (MEE-AIR-CO-LAYS) = Wednesday

jueves (WHO-AY-VAYS) = Thursday

viernes (VEE-AIR-NAYS) = Friday

sábado (SAH- BAH- DOE) = Saturday

domingo (DOE- MEAN- GO) = Sunday

Fourth grade boys are working on predictable books in Spanish class. We read the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? by Eric Carle in Spanish and are using that model to create our very own books in Spanish.

I have added additional quia activities to practice the new vocabulary. You can find these games under colores and mascotas at the end of the activities

Structurally, students are learning that in Spanish adjectives come after nouns and that they have to agree in quantity and in gender.

Please practice with your parents and family and friends. Try counting things around the house in Spanish instead of English. There are some games that have numbers through 100. DID YOU KNOW? - Columbus Day is celebrated Oct. 12 in the Spanish-speaking world. Rather than honoring Columbus, we remember the meeting of cultures. The day is called "Dia de la Raza", "Dia de la Hispanidad", "Dia del Encuentro", o "Dia del Descubrimeinto" depending on the country. Many indigenous groups refuse to celebrate this day as it signifies the beginning of their colonization.

We continue our thematic unit: the classroom

The girls in 4th grade handed in beautiful projects last Friday and they are on display in the front hallway. They made shoebox dioramas of the classroom and labeled them in Spanish. Their hard work and creativity really shows.

Boys will have a quiz on the classroom vocabulary on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18. I have added words to the vocabulary list below so you can practice at home.

Boys went on a scavenger hunt last Thursday in class. Working with a list they had to find all of the classroom objects that were labeled in the classroom with a partner. They also drew and labeled classroom objects in pictures:
