FEBRUARY AND MARCH SPANISH CLASSES Students in fourth grade have been learning the days of the week, talking about going places, talking about doing different activities on different days of the week, using the calendar and the differences in the Spanish calendar, and learning about the activities of children in Spanish speaking countries. Culturally, we have learned a song called: "Los dias de la semana son siete." Students also know how to express their birthdates in Spanish. Here is the vocabulary that students need to know for this unit: ¿Cuáles son los días de la semana? (KWAH-LAYS SEWN LOHS DEEAS DAY LAH SAY- MAH- NAH) What are the days of the week? ¿Qué día es hoy? (KAY DEE AH ES OY) = What day is today? ¿Cuál es la fecha? Rather than honoring Columbus, we remember the meeting of cultures. The day is called "Dia de la Raza", "Dia de la Hispanidad", "Dia del Encuentro", o "Dia del Descubrimeinto" depending on the country. Many indigenous groups refuse to celebrate this day as it signifies the beginning of their colonization.
