Math 6 2009-2010
Welcome to 6th grade MATH!!

I intend for us to have a great year together exploring and learning math.
Two ways to help yourself do the best you can is to come prepared to class with your math notebook, math journal, pencil, agenda, and your completed homework.

PLEASE READ

FUNDAMENTALS OF ORGANIZATION

The basic skills to have a plan for everything you do and for everything you have.

USING THE BINDER:  the method of organization

1. Everything goes in the rings of the binder!

a. Make sure ALL papers have holes punched.
b. NO papers are to be put in book bags, folders, lockers or under beds!

2. All papers need a proper heading in the upper right corner!

a. Full name (first and last) and date will be important.
b. Teachers will give you the correct heading for each class.
c. Papers without the proper heading will NOT be accepted.
d. Head notes, tests, handouts, EVERYTHING!

3. Dividers must be used properly!

a. Each teacher will give the specific headings for dividers.
b. Dividers should be labeled on both sides.

4. All papers must be kept in the correct section of the binder!

a. Class papers must go behind the divider for that class.
b. Papers should be filed as directed by the classroom teacher.

5. Each binder should be clearly identifiable!

a. Binders are color-coded for different classes.
b. Write your name in the right bottom corner on the cover of the binder.

6. Binders will be cleaned out according to the instructions of the teachers in every class!

Your teachers will be monitoring students for the correct use of binders in every class!

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ORGANIZATION

KEEPING UP WITH ASSIGNMENTS:  using the agenda

1. Keep a page marker in the agenda for easy access.

2. Write something in the agenda for EVERY class.

3. Write “NONE” or “NA” or “nothing” if no assignment was made.

4. Open the agenda to the correct page, and keep it in the desk during the entire class.

5. Write all short-term or long-term assignments that are mentioned during that class.

6. Write any materials necessary for completion of the night’s homework in the lower right part of the box  (text book, novel, handout, etc.)

7. Highlight the materials written in the lower right corner.

8. Keep the agenda with you at all times!

Your teachers will be checking your agendas to be sure that you are filling them in!

Class Guidelines

1. All Canterbury School Social Contract Behaviors and Honor Code apply to this class.
2. Be on time and prepared for class.  Always bring your textbook, notebook, paper, agenda, sharpened pencils (no pens), expo marker, and homework to class with you.  Book bags may not be brought to class.
3. Calculators will be provided as needed in class. You do not need to bring a calculator from home.  Personal calculators may be used on specified homework assignments.
4. All students will be required to keep a notebook.  All class notes, examples, worksheets, homework, quizzes, etc. will be kept in order in this notebook.  An outline of the notebook contents will be posted in the classroom.  Notebooks will make up 10% of the total grade for the first marking period.
5. Announced and/or unannounced quizzes may be given on any day of the week.  Quizzes will make up 30% of the total grade for the first marking period.
6. Homework is a necessary part of any math class.  It will be assigned most evenings and will be due at the beginning of  the following class, unless otherwise stated.  All assignments must be written in your agenda.  Homework will be graded on completion, thoroughness, and effort.  We will be using a 10-point scale for homework.
10 = complete (all work shown) 0 = No homework
5 = 1/2 complete or no work shown
Homework will not be accepted late, except in the case of absence, but all homework must be included in the notebook for full notebook credit.  The lowest homework grade will be dropped each trimester.  Homework will make up 20% of the total grade.
7. Tests will be given as needed and will be announced at least 3 days in advance and posted on the middle school online calendar.  Make-up tests will be given as soon as possible after an absence.  Tests will comprise 40% of the total first marking period grade.  Graded tests (and notebooks) will be sent home for a parent signature and returned for a homework grade the next class period.
8.  All make-up work is the responsibility of the student.  You must check the notebook contents page, and check with me, to find out what you missed. If needed, you must arrange a time to get help or make up quizzes/tests.
9.  No food or gum is allowed in this class.  Water bottles are acceptable.
10. If you have any questions  ----- ASK!  (I will be very glad to arrange help sessions.)

*************************************************************
Parents and Students,
Please read, discuss, and sign these class guidelines and place this sheet as Page 1 in your notebook. I look forward to an exciting and successful year of competence and fun.
