On this page you will find
*the 4-step plan for the problems of the week, *the grades/expectations, and *the grading rubrics.
================================================================
GRADES/EXPECTATIONS:
1. Tests are generally worth 90 points and quizzes about 60 points.*One quiz or test may be re-taken per trimester.
2. Problems of the Week are worth 15% of your grade.*Please remember to turn your POWs in on lined loose-leaf paper.
3. Notebooks and folders are checked according to a rubric at least once per trimester.*Please use a separate notebook and folder just for math notes and homework.
Minimum requirements for notebooks include:
a) Date
b) Title of the day
c) Warm-ups copied down and completed
d) Daily homework assignments completed in pencil and
checked with pen
e) Class notes
f) The POW as is posted in the classroom or on this website.
Minimum requirements for folders include: a) Completed and graded POWs (left pocket)
b) All tests and quizzes (in the clips)
c) Class handouts (right pocket)
4. Homework is checked on a daily basis.
5. "Pop" notebook quizzes will be given on the warm-ups. You must include the problem and the complete answer.
PROBLEM OF THE WEEK PHILOSOPHY:
note: POWs are due at the beginning of the class period the day they are due.
The purpose of the problem of the week is for students to attempt problems that are challenging. The teacher will not be modeling for the students how to do the problems in advance. The student should attempt different problem solving strategies in searching for the solution. Late POWs are not accepted. If a POW is turned in in the proper 4-step format (a score of 5 or higher) then the student may re-submit the POW over and over until a perfect score of 10 is achieved.
Step 1: (2 points)
a) Write out the question in your own words.
b) Discuss the basic facts in sentence form.
*The POW copied down on your loose-leaf (it belongs in your spiral notebook) does not replace step 1--you MUST write out the information from the POW in your own words.
Step 2: (2 points)
Write in a complete sentence what your plan is. Remember to include and discuss all the math you will be using to solve the problem.
Step 3: (3 points)
Show all the mathematical steps needed to solve the problem. One of the three points is rewarded if your process leads to the correct solution.
Step 4: (3 points)
Write out what your answer is to the problem in complete sentences for 2 points. The third point is for correct spelling/punctuation/grammar in your writing.
Problem Solving Strategies Include:
Too much or too little information
Use logical reasoning
Guess and check
Work backward
Write an equation
Make a table
Look for a pattern
Use multiple strategies
Solve a simpler problem
Simulate the problem
Remember to do ALL your math in PENCIL!
