Maths project, December 2001 Aims To find a practical use for all mathematics processes learned this term. To research and find out about things of interest to you. Objectives To add and subtract: shopping bills, shopping for quantities To multiply and divide: quantities, value for money To use fractions and percentages ( if learned and appropriate) To use measurement and scale (carpets, curtains, room sizes etc Plan for today Discuss measurement and use of measurement. Practise measurement ( ruler, string, body) What does your handspan measure? Your foot? Approximation and estimation. (20 mins) Work in pairs or small groups. Decide on an interesting project: Suggestions: Changing rooms. You have a budget of £500. Make over a room in your house OR Buy and equip a garden shed OR Plan a garden OR suggest an idea of your own that would interest you. Talk over plan with Annie, Dave or Jerry (20 minutes) List what you need to know : e.g.dimensions of room, furniture, carpets, curtains You can do a real or imaginary project. By the end of the day, I would like to see a sketch of proposed project a list of items to buy (20 minutes) We will then discuss all the different ways in which maths relate to your chosen project. Everyone doing book maths is more than welcome to carry on with work after discussion if decisions made quickly Homework Find catalogues or pricelists useful for project. Price some useful articles.
