May 16 Volunteer Appreciation (9:00)in cafeteria May 22 Dinosaur Field Trip to Science Center May 26 Memorial Day/School Holiday May 27-30 Last Week of School/Noon Dismissal Dear Parents, As school begins to end for the year, please be reminded that students MUST be current with: 1. lunch money that may be owed to the cafeteria 2. payment for lost library books 3. clothing that may have been borrowed from the clinic 4. home readers on loan from Mrs. Nichols Any student who owes money will not receive a report card until all issues are cleared. The card can be picked up in the office. Also no report card can be issued early. Parents leaving town before the end of school may either pick up the card in the office before June 19th or furnish a self-addressed stamped envelope for mailing on May 30. The week of May 19-23 we will be studying the word families "ake" and "ike". Our words of the week will be "that" and "they". This week we are revisiting the short vowels sounds, and we have begun our Oceans unit that will continue next week also. Please encourage your child's reading ALOUD DAILY for about 10 minutes. Our class has a good foundation for word decoding and strategies for bringing meaning to print at this point. Fluency, however, is gained with multiple opportunities to try out these new learning tools with recreational reading. You will see how it pays off. This is true of every age child, but is especially important for the early learner. Ask me if you need guidance selecting literature for your child. Let's make it a reading summer. Most of you are aware that the district gave permission for our school to dismiss at noon Tuesday through Friday the last week of school. This is to help teachers prepare for the move to the new facility. We are very grateful for the time! Your child must be picked up promptly if they are not riding the bus. The office becomes overloaded with students calling home on such days when parents forget a change of schedule. The last day of school is a picnic lunch. Parents should prepare a sack lunch with drink for themselves and their child. We will eat at 10:50. You may feel free to take your child home at the conclusion of the picnic. Kindergarten will not participate in the Fifth Grade Wave Off which begins at 11:30 for security reasons. The kindergarteners and I have had a terrific year together! They are a wonderful group. I am very grateful for the enormous parent support throughtout the year! Have a wonderful summer! Fondly, Noel Nichol
