MATH: Our first unit of study is Place Value.We are writing, comparing, ordering, and rounding numbers to the millions.We are using Problem-Solving Strategies daily with our Problem of the Day and our Problem-Solving Strategies. Please ask your child to share with you the many strategies we use to solve problems.You can expect math homework 3 to 4 nights a week.

WRITING: We are using a connections approach to model good writing. The teachers are reading from a particular story and allowing the children to relate a similar experience when writing.We are coordinating our language lessons with our writing.We have started with writing complete sentences.
We will introduce Narrative Writing,Elements of a story, and
the 6 traits of good writing.

READING:Our first novel - On the Right Track
The children are learning to use strategies to make their reading more meaningful. They are using post-its to write notes as they read. This makes our discussions during and after each chapter much more concrete.They are keeping up with each chapter with activities in their novel folder. Most work will be done at school with a few follow- up activities at home.

SOCIAL STUDIES:We are focusing on Geography skills: maps, cardinal directions, scales, keys, and location of Texas in relationship to the world.One of the goals of 4th graders this year is to identify 40 of the 50 states.We will intro- duce 5 at a time. We are starting on the west coast and will progress eastwardly. If you are using maps or globes please encourage your child to check it out with you. You can also try: http://www.mapquest.com or http://www.mapblast.com.

VOCABULARY/SPELLING: Our Spelling and Vocabulary will be introduced on Monday and Tuesday and will be tested on Friday. We will start using new Vocabulary workbooks this week. We will focus on one Unit for 2 weeks and have a quiz from the notebook when the unit is complete. There will be
one assignment per week for homework.
