Chapter 9 Celibacy and Religious Life 1. Celibacy is about self-donation to God and neighbor, showing the world what it means to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. 2. When a priest is ordained, he chooses to marry the church as his bride, When a woman enters consecrated life, she is being espoused to Christ himself. 3. Purpose-undivided union with God 4. Celibacy is a witness to the fact that there is a greater joy – heaven – than the joys of this world. Celibates channel that energy toward full communion with God, reflecting in a unique way the meaning and self-donation. 5. The ultimate purpose of our lives: union with God. 6. Celibacy frees modern men and women to serve Christ and the Church in totality of mind, body, and spirit. 7. Reason for a priest being male pg. 135 (“in persona Christi”) Church is the Bride of Christ Only a man can act in the person of Christ as groom meant to marry his bride, the Church 8. Nuns are contemplative women who live in monasteries. Sisters live in convents . They are apostolic. 9.
