Chapter 9 Celibacy and Religious Life

1. Celibacy is about self-donation to God and neighbor, showing the world what it
means to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength.

2. When a priest is ordained, he chooses to marry the church as his bride, When a
woman enters consecrated life, she is being espoused to Christ himself.

3. Purpose-undivided union with God

4. Celibacy is a witness to the fact that there is a greater joy – heaven – than the
joys of this world. Celibates channel that energy toward full communion with
God, reflecting in a unique way the meaning and self-donation.

5. The ultimate purpose of our lives: union with God.

6. Celibacy frees modern men and women to serve Christ and the Church in
totality of mind, body, and spirit.

7. Reason for a priest being male pg. 135
         (“in persona Christi”)
Church is the Bride of Christ
Only a man can act in the person of Christ as groom meant to marry his bride,
      the Church

8. Nuns are contemplative women who live in monasteries.
Sisters live in convents . They are apostolic.

9. If a priest were married, it would be a great challenge for him to be completely
   dedicated to the church.

10. Eschatology - last things
            Death, Judgment, Heaven, Hell
