Tuesday 2/15 Homework: Inside Earth Ch. 4 Minerals: (Reminder: There will be a Minerals Vocabulary Quiz on Friday.)
Defining what a mineral is can be easy if you organize your information. View the Minerals PowerPoint (MineralsDefined
) and create a chart in your lab book. You may draw the chart in the lab book by hand or type it out. For those who want to type it, you may open the pre-made chart and save (Minerals Defined Chart).
2/11-2/14 Inside Earth Ch. 4 Minerals:
1) The transition from Atoms, Elements, and the Periodic Table to Minerals take us through the sequence of mineral growth.
Use the flow chart to follow the way elements become minerals and rocks. The last slide shows you how quartz forms. Click to view: Elements-To-Minerals (You need to be able to explain this on by Monday)
2) Our next study skill is to organize information using outlining. Complete the outline in your Lab Book (right-hand side) (I.E. Ch. 4-1: Properties of Minerals). Click to review the guide: Outlining-I.E.-Ch.-4-1
I do not want you to get stuck and quit. You have learned how to create Outline Notes in Mr. Gow's MARS class, and I want you to work hard to organize the information in the book into outline form. This is an IMPORTANT study skill. We will go over this and make additions and changes on Monday in class. If you are not confident then you can write your outline on lined paper or use computer/print, then later tyou can tape it into your lab book. Click on the PDF to view the Birds Outline Notes that you made with Mr. Gow: BirdOutline-Gow

2/4 Study, study, study for Monday's K.C.:
Atoms, Elements, Molecules, Compounds, and the Periodic Table
This weekend, reread the sections of the textbook that we studied during this unit: Chap. 3-3 and 3-4 (pp 68-76), 4-2 (pp 92-98), 5-2 (pp 112-118). Use your Lab Books to restudy your notes, and use the PowerPoint slides to confirm your notes. Don't forget to add to your vocabulary flash cards, especially the key terms from Elements and Compounds, and Periodic Table. You may also visit Mrs. Heim's Quia website to play her Quia games to help with the vocabulary and key terms

Congrats to those who stayed for the extra help on the Structure of the Atom. Everyone left having CONFIDENCE that they understood and could illustrate the structure of atoms of ANY element!
>To study for the Knowing Check for Mastery of the Properties of Matter, please study:
your Lab Book, textbook, homeworks, Matter study guide, Chapter Review in the textbook, Quia Activity below, General Properties Notes PowerPoint below, and today's Review Challenge PowerPoint. Study for comprehension, challenge yourself, and prepare carefully and systematically. In bocca al lupo!

Hey kids! Scroll down to select the Quia study-helper activity on Matter-Mass, Volume and Density. Good luck!
Monday (12/6) and Tuesday (12/7) Homework:
Open the General Properties of Matter PPT and record notes in your Lab Book.
Remember to use only right-hand pages. You should tape your Density Lab recording sheets with the conclusion questions in your book (they should be taped at the next available space after your notes)
NOTICE: Print out page two if you need to. Juct click on the link:Density Lab Conclusions

Thursday (11/18) Homework:
Read Section 1-2 (14-20) and complete the Mass and Weight worksheet
Can you open or save this link to a MSWord document: Mass and Weight
Weekend (11/12-11/14) Homework:
Study, study, study for Monday's Controlled Experiment Learning Check
Double Check the study guide: SciMeth Study Guide
You need to know: the definitions for the new vocabulary (5 terms);
how to understand a scientific question to find the c.g., e.g., v., and constants.
Don't forget to bring your lab Book back to class on Friday!
You may also study/confirm you Lab Book notes by checking the PPT:

Thursday November 4th Homework: STUDY, STUDY, STUDY for tomorrow's KC!
Remember:
1. Study the Tools of Science, their measureable terms, and the units of measurement
2. Study the highlighted key words and terms, and be able to match them to the steps of the scientific method.
3. Study the correct form of writing the Q, H, T, R, C of lab reports using the notes and homework assignments.
4. Finally, you may review the SciMeth PowerPoint here:ScientificMethodSteps
Friday, October 29th
This weekend, I want you to think back on the Peanut Butter/Fluff and Jelly Sandwich fiasco, and ask yourself: "Do I really know all the steps to make the perfect sandwich?"
For homework, please think through, step-by-step, and write each and every step in the making of a PBand J Sandwich. Remember: The reason we do this is to inform other scientists how to perform the same experiment so we can pass our knowledge on to the next generation!

Tonight 10/21:
Using your I Can Write Conclusions worksheet: go ahead and transfer, sentence by sentence, your conclusion paragraph to the worksheet. Put each sentence in its correct location. When you finish, you may need to add sentences or rewrite some, so go ahead and produce a better conclusion sheet. Remember: why in the world would there be different colors in different amounts. What are those Smartie people thinking!
Tonight 10/20: Periods G, E, and B (A does not have homework)
Write a conclusion paragraph for the results of the Smartie Lab. Remember to ask your self why there would be more of one color than the other. Do the colors have a special meaning?
You can use the I Can Write Conclusions worksheet, just click:

Tonight (10/14) for homework: Continue to choose your 10 sites near wetland environments and 10 for agricultural zones. Make sure you record the mean for each one. Be a careful scientist! Only accept data that you feel confident was collected and analyzed carefully.
Complete the anaysis questions on the back (for example: find the mean of the means) and think of at least five good observations about Medfield and the way dust moves and settles around these two areas of our town.
Good luck scientists - we will collaborate in class tomorrow.
The dust database opens slowly, but it is still better to open it rather than save it:

Homework for the weekend of 10/1-10/3
Hello Scientists
This weekend your assignment is to complete your Scientific Method vocabulary worksheet. Remember to use you Scientific Method reading with your highlighted definitions as your source. For the drawings, illustrate in color a story of yourself as a scientist (for example: a paleontologist or geologist) doing a scientific investigation by following the scientific method.
This will be used as a study guide for next weeks Vocabulary Quiz (To be announced on Monday!)

Homework for 9/23
Hello Scientists
Tonight I want you scout out a good location where you will conduct your data collection. You will collect data for our experiment this coming weekend, but for now you need to find and prepare the place in preparation for the experiment.
Remember to follow the Step by Step instructions to find and clean your area. It only needs to be about 5 inches by 5 inches. You will collect the dust that lands in that spot every few hours during the day on either Saturday or Sunday (directions and sample kits will be handed out tomorrow).
Below is a link to the Step by Step directions. Just click!

Homework for the weekend 9/25 and 9/26
Scientists,
Remember, you can solve problems. I trust you to find a way to resolve any issue that might be causing a problem for your data collection. It is supposed to be a beautiful weekend so we shouldn't have to worry about rain affecting our data.
Just don't forget that the key is to wipe down the sample area after each collection and wait for a minimum of 4 hours before taking another sample. Be very careful with the tape, and bring in all samples even if the tape got messed up. If you do have a tape disaster, then you may use some of your own tape as long as it is clear and long enough to fold over to seal in the dust sample.
Below is a link to the Dust Sample Collection directions. Just click!

Later tonight I will upload directions to transfer picture and document files from your computer to your flash drive.
