Welcome to The Game Design Intramural!
The intramural meets on Wednesdays from 2:10 to 3:10 in the Blake Middle School computer lab. The intramural will run for 8 weeks from April 4th through May 30th.
Student Games
These games are just a few examples of what students created during the first session of the Game Design Intramural.
In eight hours, students learned to create objects within a game, coding elements such as movement, collisions with other objects, and timed events. Some students even incorporated the more complex multi-step code used to give a game gravity, or to change elements of the game in response to game events. They learned to select, add, and even edit sprites (individual graphics) and backgrounds for their games.
Most importantly, students were able to explore their own ideas and create a game of their own vision.
Eight hours is a very short period of time in which to produce a playable game. As a result, few of the students felt ready to share what they had created so far. As the intramural continues into later sessions, more games will be posted here.
In any of the games below, pressing the R key will restart the level.
Untitled Platform Game 1
A fun, well-constructed platformer with eight thought-provoking levels! Use your jumping and wall-climbing abilities to find your way through to the finish. This game provides its own detailed directions once you begin playing. Enjoy!
Hint: Practice your wall jumping on the early levels because you will need it later on when falling can be fatal.
Old Man
An incredibly unique puzzle of a game! Each of the 13 levels is like a little mystery to be solved. You control a little old man and need to find out how to get him out of each level. There are many different objects to interact with: dinosaurs, zombies, ninjas, blowfish, bees, among others. You never know just what effect an object will have until you test it. But what really sets this game apart is that Old Man can’t beat all of the levels by himself. Not only can you control Old Man, but you can also control The Key, which can unlock the path for you. How to do that is part of the mystery. Get ready to start thinking!
Controls
Up Arrow: Jump
Left Arrow: Left
Down Arrow: Stop
Right Arrow: Right
Hint: Try hitting jump more than once.
1000 Years of Rage
You are Asuma, an ancient warrior, risen from the dead to exact vengeance on the evil Tetsuya! Float and fight your way through six levels where everything wants to make sure you stay dead this time. All you need to do to advance to the next level is reach the green gem, but that’s not always as easy as it sounds.
Controls
Up Arrow: Float Up
Left Arrow: Float Left
Right Arrow: Float Right
Down Arrow: Float Down
Space: Shoot an Arrow
Hint: Death couldn’t stop Asuma, so why should little things like walls or the edges of the screen?
Untitled Motorcycle Game
Race your motorcycle across the track without hitting the spinning stars! It seems easy at first, but with each level you must maneuver around more stars as the game becomes more of a maze than a simple track. Can you find your way through all eight levels?
Controls
Up Arrow: Up
Left Arrow: Reverse
Right Arrow: Forward
Down Arrow: Down
Hint: Don’t cut it too close when you are near a star. You might get hit when you think you’re safe.
Untitled Platform Game 2
In this devious platformer, you need to steer your ghost through 10 mind-bending levels! Your success depends as much on your wits as the speed of your fingers. Some rooms may seem impossible at first glance, but there is always a way through. If you can get past the first fireball, maybe you have a chance of finding your way through to the finish. Good luck!
Controls
Up Arrow: Jump
Left Arrow: Left
Right Arrow: Right
Hint: Your ghost can cling to the bricks when he jumps. You can use this to climb walls, or even to move along ceilings.
