Mon., Feb. 28
We made packets with our test, the drawings, and study guides.  Please get these signed by Thurs., March 3.  I talked a bit about grading the lab write-ups and hope to gget these back to you next week.  We began talking about things in Section 9 today - How life replaces itself.  reproduction - organisms produce new organisms similar to the "parents".  One cell can grow only so big and then it divides.  You start out as one cell and then become trillions of cells.

HW - get packet signed and ask your parents about how seedless oranges are grown.

Wed., March 2
We discussed how we can get seedless oranges.  We talked about and took notes on the fact that in many cells, the DNA in the nucleus lines up into chromosomes (which are made of units called genes) and duplicate before the cell splits.  Then half the chromosomes go to one side of the cell and half go to the other side and the cell finally splits, both new cells having exactly the same information as the original cell.

HW - get packet signed for tomorrow.  If you didn't get a chance to read p. 40-41 in Structures of Life and the bottom of p. 20 in the Biology book, please do that for tonight.

Thurs., March 3
We calculated an average for the amount of weight we gained per year since birth.  We continued reading in the Discover Science books.  We're all at different spots but we're reading about seed producing plants and non-seed producing plants.

HW - none - I have a game on the website for practicing for section 9 test, but it may be too early to use this.
------------------------------------------------------------
Mon., March 7
I handed back your lab reports on the egg experiment and we made packets to go home.  I asked that you review the sections where you didn't get 4 points and look at "Betsy's" lab to see what you could have included to improve your grade.

Today we talked about asexual reproduction (requiring only one parent)  examples are the amoeba, paramecium, and yeast and sexual reproduction (requiring two parents)  examples would be humans, fish, dogs, plants, mice.  The female sex cell would be the egg cell and the male sex cell would be the sperm cell.

We then learned the differences between mitosis - cell division that produces the same amount of chromosomes in the new cells, and meiosis - cell division that produces half the amount of chromosomes tin the sex cells.

HW - get packet signed and finish reading pages 42-45 in the Structures of Life book.

Tues., March 8
You saw the yeast lab on page 43 and began doing the lab write-up for that.  You were given three worksheets and were asked to finish them by tomorrow if not done in class.

HW - get packet signed by Thurs. finish sheets for tomorrow

Wed., March 9
I went over parts of the lab and what should be included in each of these parts.  I said that the typed write-up would probably be due next Fri., March 18.  I also reviewed mitosis and meiosis and continued the explanation that if egg or sperm cells were to produce more egg or sperm cells, the process of cell division that they would go through is mitosis.  We also talked about the stages of development such as zygote, embryo, and fetus.

HW - get packet signed for tomorrow and make sure you have the three sheets completed that were handed out Tues.

REMINDER ABOUT TEST ON SECTION 9 NEXT TUES.

Thurs., March 10

We talked about and took notes on fertilization which is the joining of the egg and sperm cells and about how identical and fraternal twins form.  We worked a bit on our yeast lab, which is due next Fri.  We then went over the three worksheet that were given out on Tues.

REMINDER ABOUT TEST ON SECTION 9 NEXT TUES.  THERE ARE TWO GAMES (INCLUDING ONE BATTLESHIP GAME) ON THE COMPUTER.

Fri., March 11
We talked about traits being the characteristics passed on from one generation to the next and the fact that you get one gene from your mom and one gene from your dad for particular traits.  Chromosmes are in pairs and the 23'rd pair of chromosomes determines whether the baby is a boy or a girl.  Egg cells can only be X but sperm cells can be either X or Y.  If XX results, the baby is a girl.  If XY results, it is a boy.  Traits can be dominant (always show up) or recessive (only show up if both parents carry that trait).

We got a study packet and completed and corrected the first three pages of it.

REMINDER ABOUT TEST ON SECTION 9 NEXT TUES.  THERE ARE TWO GAMES (INCLUDING ONE BATTLESHIP GAME) ON THE COMPUTER.  THE YEAST LAB WRITE-UP IS DUE NEXT FRI.
------------------------------------------------------------
Mon., March 14
We reviewed for tomorrow's test.  Sorry I didn't get to see 5-H and 5-B today but we'll review tomorrow quickly before the test.

REMINDER ABOUT TEST ON SECTION 9 TOMORROW.  THERE ARE TWO GAMES (INCLUDING ONE BATTLESHIP GAME) ON THE COMPUTER.  THE YEAST LAB WRITE-UP IS DUE THIS FRI., MARCH 18.

Tues., March 15
We reviewed for tomorrow's test.

HW - get packet signed and work on Yeast Lab - both are due Fri.

Wed., March 16
We made packets to go home with our tests.  Please have these signed for Fri.  I handed out another packet and explained what we would be doing in the next three sections of study - classification of living things, vertebrates, and invertebrates.  We read pages 50-57 in our Structures of Life books.

HW - get packet signed and work on Yeast Lab - both are due Fri.

Thurs., March 17
We saw how living things are divided into kingdoms and how they're further divided into phyla, class, order, family, genus, and species.  We played a game that eliminated people because the categorygot smaller and smaller that they could fit in.  We read and discussed about plants, protists and monerans and took notes on the two categories that monerans would be divided into.  Just remember Moneran and bacteria fit into that category.

HW - get packet signed and work on Yeast Lab - both are due Fri.  TOMORROW!!  YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE A TEST NEXT THURS ON SECTION 10.  THERE ARE TWO GAMES ON THE WEBSITE TO PLAY FOR THIS.

HW - get packet signed and work on Yeast Lab - both are due Fri.

Fri., March 18
I collected the signed sheets and the yeast labs.  We finished off talking about the different kingdoms of living things and looked at the sheet that had all the different groupings from kingdom to species including Latin names of species along with their common names.  This will be on the test.

TEST IS THURS., MARCH 24.  USE THE TWO GAMES ON THE WEBSITE TO PRACTICE FOR THIS.
------------------------------------------------------------
Mon., March 21
I announced a change in the date of the test and it will be one day earlier - on Wed.  We went over different phyla in the animal kingdom such as arthropoda, mollusca, and chordata (we highlighted information and wrote information in our packets).  We also worked on the differences between arachnids and insects (page in packet).  I handed out a study guide and explained what will be included on the test.  I will have two extra practice sessions - one on Tues. from 3:15-4:00 and one on Wed. morning from 8:00-8:30.

HW - study for test - study packet and three games on website

Tues., March 22
We practiced for tomorrow's test.

HW - study for test - study packet and three games on website

Wed., March 23
We had or test on Section 10 today.  Please have your books - both the Structures of Life and the Biology books in class tomorrow, as I will collect them.

HW - happy "Family Night"!

Thurs., March 24
I handed back your tests and we made packets to take home.  I collected the Structures of Life books and Biology books.  I also handed out the Animals books.  I mentioned about what you can do for extra credit this marking period.  People were able to sign up for the extra credit reports on an insect.  We also saw a film on the classification of living things.

NOTE - THERE MAY BE ONE LAST TEST FOR THE MARKING PERIOD ON APRIL 5TH. ON VERTEBRATES.  THERE ARE TWO TESTS ON THE WEBSITE ALREADY TO PRACTICE FOR THIS TEST.

HW - get your packet signed by Tues.
------------------------------------------------------------
Mon., March 28
We got a packet of notes and activity sheets on different groups of animals - fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals.  We read, discussed, and highlighted things related to fish and completed the next two pages on sharks.  We read pages 32-35 in The Animals Kingdom book and pages 82-83 in the Discover Science books.

I'm planning a test for next Tues., April 5th on this section.  There is a test on the website to study for this.

HW - get packet signed by tomorrow.

Tues., March 29
We read and highlighted information on amphibians.  We also did the first two pages of the packet based on pages 30-31 in The Animal Kingdom book.

HW - review information on the web for the test.

Wed., March 30
We finished and went over the first two pages of our packets and I assigned the two sheets on fish to be completed by tomorrow.

HW - finish two sheets on fish.  Test is Tues., April 5.  Game on website to practice.

Thurs., March 31
We went over the two sheets on fish and highlighted information on reptiles.  We read page 85 in Discover Science and pages 37 to the top of 41 in The Animal Kingdom.  We began work on the two sheets on reptiles.  Please finish that for homework if it's not done.

HW - finish two sheets on reptiles.  Test is Tues., April 5.  Game on the website NOW HAS 40 QUESTIONS ON IT - JUST LIKE THE TEST!!  Practice this.

Fri., April 1
We corrected the sheets on reptiles and completed the sheet on cold blooded animals together.  We highlighted important information in our packets on birds and mammals.  Many classes got to go outside to observe the mallards preening themselves.  We read pages 86-87 in the Discover Science    books and pages 41-41 in The Animals book.

HW - practice 40 questions from the test that's on the website for Section 11 - THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT WILL BE ON TUESDAY'S TEST!!!!!
------------------------------------------------------------
Mon., April 4
We decided which groups would be doing which animals for the puppet shows.  I explained a bit about the puppet show and that first we would be working on the information for the introduction and the bakgrounds and then the information for the individual puppets (2 per person).
