Mon., Nov. 1 Field trip to the Sterling Hill Mining Museum. Tues., Nov. 2 We finished writing about the igneous rocks and took notes on metamorphic rocks. We began identifying metamorphic rocks. HW - begin reviewing information for next Wednesday's Science test on material in Section 3. I NOW HAVE TWO GAMES ON THE WEBSITE TO PRACTICE FOR THE TEST. REMINDER - TEST ON SECTION 3 SCIENCE ON WED., NOV. 10. PRACTICE SESSION IS STILL MON., NOV. 8. Wed., Nov. 3 I handed out a copy of notes on all of the rocks we looked at and each class finished looking at the rocks they didn't see. I also handed out a study guide for what will be on the test because I won't see most classes until next Wed., the day of the test. PRACTICE SESSION IS STILL MON., NOV. 8 from 3:15 until 4:00! ------------------------------------------------------------ Both on Mon., Nov. 8 and Tues., Nov. 9 we had the CAP program during Science class sand I didn't get to meet with all the classes. When we had extra time, we saw a video on Hawaii and the volcanoes and reviewed for the Science test. HW - Science test is tomorrow - study. The extra credit report is also due tomorrow. Wed., Nov. 10 Science test on material in Section 10. HW - please make sure you have all your sheets to include in the packet we'll make tomorrow. Thurs., Nov. 11 We had our Sugar Crystals moms in today - Mrs. Wang and Mrs. Savino, to help us make rock candy. Thanks so much for your help, SCM's!! We should be able to enjoy this delicacy by the end of next week. We also got back our tests and made packets to go home. They are due signed by Monday. We got to take a look at our salt crystals, as the 12 teaspoons of water finally evaporated. We saw that the new crystals were generally much larger than the others. HW - get the top sheet of the packet signed by Monday. Fri., Nov. 12 We began working with Sections 4 and 5 - we identified 25 rocks and minerals and we'll have a "Rock Quest" towards the end of next week where individually you'll show that you know these 25 r & m's. You can look at the two links under "Useful Links" on my website to check our what the rocks and minerals look like. We'll also complete a lab write-up for the salt lab that we did. HW - get the top sheet of the packet signed by Monday. ------------------------------------------------------------ Mon., Nov. 15 I collected the top sheet of the packets. We did the rock quest at the beginning of the period. We then went on to doing out a lab write-up on the salt lab that we did a while ago. I handed out a packet of papers which included the format for the lab write-up, a sample lab done out my Betsy Smith (me), and a rubric I will be using to grade your lab write-ups. We will be doing the rough draft in class and the final copy at home. We should be done by either Thurs. or Fri. If you need some extra help on yours, please come in to see me. Between this Wednesday and next, each of you will be doing the rock quest on your own. You may do it during class any day or before or after school (just this week). You can even ask me about doing it at lunch time. FINAL COPY OF LAB DUE - MON., NOV. 22 HW - please have a title for your lab write-ups written by tomorrow. FINAL COPY OF LAB DUE - MON., NOV. 22 REMEMBER THAT NEXT WEEK IS HALF DAYS AND CONFERENCES ARE ON MONDAY AND TUES. ------------------------------------------------------------ Mon., Nov. 22 In class today we went over the lab requirements once more and we were able to make additions or corrections to our actual labs before handing them in. Tues., Nov. 23 We got a packet entitled "Earth Materials Notebook" which we will be starting after Thanksgiving. Some people worked on the Rock Quest. I handed out a large text book and had you read information about what we'e been studying - from page 237. HW - anyone who didn't finish the Rock Quest, please be ready to finish that tomorrow. You may come in tomorrow morning from 8:10 on to do the practice or the actual Quest. I have two games on the website to practice for Section 5. Section 4 is considered the Rock Quest. Wed., Nov. 24 We made mock rocks today that we'll use in our study next week. Today was the last day to do the Rock Quest. HW - HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! ------------------------------------------------------------ Mon., Nov. 29 We got our mock rocks today and completed pages 2-3 of it, measuring the rock's circumference, diameter, depth, and weight on page 3. (we had to give the circumference, diameter, and depth in centimeters and millimeters) We drew the rock and also drew a magnified version of the rock. We listed what we observed in the rock on page 2. HW - finish anything on pages 2-3 that you didn't get to finish in class today. Test is on Dec. 16 and there are two games on the website to practice for this. Tues., Nov. 30 I wasn't in school today but the children worked from the Earth materials books and read and discussed some of the ideas in there.
