This is a weekly assignment that is given every Monday and should be completed by Friday of the same week. Each assignment varies weekly in topic, length, and it's grammer requirements. All students should write a rough draft, have someone proofread the draft (please note that all rough drafts should be signed by the proofreader), then complete a final copy. Rough drafts, final copies, assignment sheets, and scoring rubrics (which are available in the classroom) should all be stapled together and turned in upon completion. Please note that POW is an independent assignment and should be completed as homework. WEEKLY READING ASSIGNMENTS: Question of the Week (QOW) This is a weekly assignment intended to help students become more proficient with using different reference materials (dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlas, etc.) as well as a tool to help students learn/practice new reading skills such as; fact vs. opinion, cause vs. effect, and vocabulary. This assignment is given to students every Monday, and should be turned in by Friday of the same week. Please note that QOW is an independent assignment and should be completed as homework. Vocabulary Packets This weekly assignment is distributed to students every Monday and is due on the day of the student's reading class, block day. All of the packets will be collected, graded, and given back the same day, so that students are able to study for the corresponding quiz (vocabulary and spelling). The corresponding quiz will be given every Friday. Each vocabulary list is presented to the students in a format that allows them to use contextual clues, to aid them in the completion of the packet. All of the packets begin with a one to two page text containing all of the vocabulary words. Each vocabulary word is printed in boldface, to ease student's identification and recognition of the words. Typically, each text is followed by two to three pages of activities that allow the students to master the vocabulary, while teaching students to manipulate the information so that they are able to answer all types of questions related to the text. This is important, as they are all skills that students are required to know on TAAS and asked to use in other classes. The last page of the packet is always a writing activity that provides the students with a prompt and a forum for the application of using the vocabulary in written form. READING ACTIVITIES: 1.
