Please return signed papers by Monday, if at all possible. We discussed various aspects of the Presidential election process.( National Conventions, Campaigning, Debates, Election Day, The Electoral College, and The Inaguration.) Have a very nice weekend and happy Yom Kippur! 9/27/04 I continued to collect signed quizzes from last week. The children worked on a map where candy had to be delivered all around the United States. They also had to use the proper abbreviations to label the states on a map of the United States.(candy products had to be color coded) 9/28/04 I collected signed quizzes. Please remind your child, if you have not yet seen his/her quiz. The children worked on completing their Dentist's Nightmare maps. Some form of assessment will be utilized to evaluate the accuracy of the completed maps. All maps must be completed for homework! 9/30/04 We reviewed Worksheet 4, which was completed in class yesterday.(utilizing directions) I introduced the concepts of using latitude/longitude. A large wall map was used to illustrate the concept. 10/01/04 I distributed the Time For Kids weekly publications. The children had to read the article on Hurricane Ivan. They were then given papers, where they had to identify the who, what, where, when, and why of the article. A short summary was also required from each child. Papers were collected at the end of the period.(this was just a practice paper, and all children were apprised of that) Have a great weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!10/06/04 The children completed a sheet, relating to the Thirteen Colonies, utilizing an atlas and a map.They then had to answer questions about the colonies.Please be advised that the grades reported on the interims, which you will receive next week, are based on only two assessments. Rather than offer a make-up quiz on the state abbreviation assessment, I have decided to delete the lowest grade for each child, before calculating the final averages for the first marking period! Have a nice evening. 10/07/04 The children watched approximately fifteen minutes of the first Presidential debate.( a special thank you is extended to the Hendersons for providing the taped segment) Children were instructed to write questions/comments, which were discussed after the viewing process. They were also told that they could record three issues mentioned by each candidate for their extra credit opportunity.Have a great night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 10/14/04 The children were informed that their first test in social studies will be administered on Tuesday,October 26, 2004. We discussed highlights of last night's Presidential debate. The children then completed page 39 in their longitude/latitude packet. The children completed page 40 in their longitude/latitude packets. Please be advised that the children are going to the Book Fair with Mrs. Howat tomorrow! The test in social studies will be administered on 10/26/04.(next Tuesday 10/20/04 I reviewed parts of speech(noun, verb, and adjective) in preparation for the day's lesson. The children paired off and completed a Mad Libs page on The Inagural Address of President. (a special thank you is extended to Kristina Koskinen for providing me with the page for the lesson) Various members of the classes read their addresses to the other children. We completed two of them orally in each class, before the children worked in pairs. 10/21/04 I distributed packets explaining the Electoral College and how it works.We read and completed activities on the first two pages of the packet.The children seemed very attentive during the lesson, and they were actively involved in the discussions which ensued.I'm sorry about last night, but at least we will finally get some needed rest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 10/25/04 No regular lessons were taught in social studies today, due to an excellent rocks/minerals presentation by Mr.Schudel. The children worked on completing a Time For Kids worksheet on Mount Saint Helens volcano in Washington. I have arranged to have the children vote for their favorite Presidential candidates on Tuesday.( a special thank you is extended to Mrs. Colangelo, for providing the voting booth) Enjoy your weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 11/11/04 Mrs. Lynn Ullman presented an excellent Eyes on Art program( Prehistoric Art- The Stone Age) to all fifth grade classes. The children were most attentive and enthusiastic during the entire presentation. Kudos to Mrs. Ullman for a superb job! 11/16/04 I distributed packets on the Southwest Indians and gave suggestions to the children on how to create a Pueblo village.(see page 17 of the packet) We read and discussed pages 16-19 of the packet. I offered the children an extra credit opportunity.( they may create a legend of 5-7 typed sentences and provide a drawn and colored picture depicting their legends. The legend and picture are due 11/30/04. See page 18 of the packet.) 11/17/04 I read a short article to the children, about the importance of kivas in the Pueblo villages.( A special thank you is extended to Kaitlin Reilly, for bringing in the article.)We reviewed the important roles of men in the Pueblo society, and discussed the importance of women and children to the families! Have a nice evening.( we read/discussed pages 20 and 21 in the Southwest Indians packet) 11/18/04 We read/discussed the last page of the Southwest Indians packet.(Page 33) The children were then divided into groups and they began brainstorming about their projects.( Kachinas, Dream Catchers, and Pueblo Villages) 11/19/04 The children broke into their respective groups and began organizing their ideas for their projects.They are expected to take notes, as a group, of their daily discussions. Small group activities will continue next week. The children have submitted all papers/projects, and I am pretty impressed with the results of their efforts. They are beautifully done. Today, we continued to discuss the Mayan society and I informed the children that a test is scheduled for next Wednesday.( 1/19/05) A study guide will be distributed to them by Wednesday.
