Welcome! Another year has come upon us, and I am very excited to be back! I am looking forward to seeing all the bright smiling faces for this upcoming school year. Here at DMS we have had tremendous success with our physical fitness test scores improving each year. There is no doubt that the scores are going to continue to get better for this school year as well.
Course Description
It is the goal of the Physical Education Department of Damascus Middle School to emphasize the importance of being physically fit for a lifetime by providing a diverse, active fitness program for all students. Each student is required to actively participate on a daily basis.
"In spite of the increased public awareness of the importance of physical activity, these are some alarming trends in our nation's schools. Physical Education has been drastically reduced across the nation in the past two decades. In addition, obesity and diabetes among children and adolescents is increasing while the amount of walking and bicycling is decreasing-increased academic demands, increased hours spent in sedentary activities (e.g., watching TV), and decreased opportunities for activity in schools and communities have resulted in children and youth becoming less active." -The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports
At Damascus Middle School, we will give every student the opportunity to be introduced to different activities in order to encourage the students to continue being active outside of school.
Class Expectations
Tennis shoes MUST be worn everyday for Physical Education class. Failure to wear tennis shoes will prohibit the students from participating in class. Repeatedly missing class due to inappropriate dress will lower their grade for the six weeks. Sandles and "Crocks" are not acceptable.
THREE written notes from the parent/guardian will be accepted per nine weeks excusing the student from Physical Education class. Any additional days missed will be unexcused. Doctor's excuses will be accepted.
Sixth and seventh grade students will be assigned either a passing grade or failing grade based on their participation and results of written and/or skills tests for each grading period. Eighth grade students will be assigned a letter grade based on their participation and results of written and/or skills tests for each grading period.
***Non Participation Assignments**Any student who doesn't participate in class shall have five points deducted from their nine weeks grade each time. They will be given a Health assignment to complete, while not participating. This gives them an opportunity to make up points missed due to sittting out of class. Students with Dr. Excuses or Parent Notes will be able to recieve a full five points back for an assignment, while un-excused students will only be able to recieve two points back. Keep in mind that the amount and quality of work turned in will aslo determine point values for non-participation assignments.
