Current Event Assignment
Article
You should find a “current” event story based on an event that has some social, political, economic, or historical significance from a newspaper, magazine, or internet article.

The current event has to be on a topic related to Asia.  Remember that Asia covers East Asia (Japan, China, Koreas), Southeast Asia (Vietnam and surrounding countries), South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc.), Central Asia (Kazakstan and neighboring countries), Southwest Asia (the “Middle East”, Iran, Iraq, Israel, etc.), and Australia and the Pacific Islands.   The story should be no more than a week old. If you use a magazine or newspaper, staple a copy of the article to your assignment.  If you use an internet article, include the ENTIRE “URL” at the bottom of your assignment.  Example:

http://www.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/asiapcf/auspac/12/02/australia.terror.us/index.html

Not enough info:
www.cnn.com

Summary

First part- SUMMARY (paragraph or list)
The first part must include  a direct quote from your article.
Write a paragraph that summarizes that current event in your own words  (besides the quote).
OR

BAD:  Who:  Prime Minister Koizumi

GOOD: Who: The subject of the article was Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, who was criticizing political opponents this week.

Second part- Opinion or Connection
1 paragraph.
For general current events, express your opinion on the information or issues surrounding your article.  For Asia current events, do the same, OR explain how the information in the article relates to what we are learning (you can also express your opinion, if you want).
