Week of October 25, 2004 Dear Students and Parents, Another week of school is on the way. Mrs. Cummings is typing a series of stories the kids have written based on stories we have read these past 2 weeks. Be prepared to enjoy some reading. We have begun to write fall, October or Halloween stories, stressing longer sentences with descriptive words. They have learned about nouns, verbs, and adjectives in Halloween words to include in their writing. We will be adding 'comparisons' to make their stories richer. For example- the clouds look like pillows. We'll try for 1 for each story! They are enjoying writing! We continue to stress number sense and problem solving. Examples are skip counting, guess my rule, reading graphs and asking quesitons, etc. All students are beginning to round numbers on their own, write numbers in many forms, and divide money into groups. Reading instruction includes Wilson skills, sight words reading, comprehension in Wilson text and in Henry and Mudge books. Third grade homework should not take more than 30 minutes and 20 minutes reading. Please let me know if it takes longer.
