Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! I hope everyone, both students and parents, will visit my web page and enjoy the links to a variety of information that will be interesting, fun, and useful for everyone in the family as well as learning about what we will be doing in Room 3 each week. I will try to update weekly with new information about our curriculum. Some of the links reinforce concepts that we are working on in class and I will also be creating some games as the year progresses. The beginning of our school year is exciting and very busy! I hope to see many of you at our curriculum night, which will be announced very soon. I will be sharing much more information about our daily routine, expectations and the curriculum on that night as well as answering any questions parents may have. A copy of the supply list that was included in kindergarten report cards will also be available that evening. Here is some information about our curriculum for the month of September. This will be updated each month: Language Arts: We will begin our phonics this year by reviewing the alphabet and each letter's corresponding sounds. These lessons will also include proper letter formation and spacing of letters and words. Our first theme in our literature series is called "Here I Am" and is all about first graders, their friends, and their experiences at school and in their community. Everyday Math: This math series begins with a discussion of the calendar and information about our class that can be used to learn about numbers. An example is beginning to talk about the number of students in our class and the number absent each day and then asking the students to determine the number present in our room each day. It really is fun for all of us to see that we use "number sense" everyday in our routines, from the lunch count as we begin our day to the bus lines at the end of the day. Games are an important part of this curriculum and we'll begin the year learning "Number Squeeze". Science: We have a brand new science series published by Scott Foresman which I am very excited about. One new component of the classroom materials is a set of readables that reinforce the concepts, extend their learning, and can be used during Language Arts in our reading groups to connect our curriculums. These are available for each chapter in a variety of reading levels. Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Space and Technology are all topics that are included in this curriculum. Social Studies: Norwell is our community and we'll begin the year talking about what a community is and who lives here with us and their roles. We will also talk about the Constitution in September and use our Scholastic News magazine to learn about and reinforce these topics. Week of 9/3: Phonics Concepts: s, m
