The resource students are continuing to work hard in reading. The second graders are reading a variety of books, fiction and non-fiction. This week we planted popcorn seeds to watch the stages of the seed growth. We will be writing a report about this project. Earlier we studied elephants and read books about their way of life. On May 5 we will be visiting the Riddle Elephant Sanctuary at Guy. This fieldtrip will be a great learning experience. The cost is $5.00 per child. Permission letters will be sent to parents soon. First grade students are continuing to learn reading skills. They are showing great progress in phonics, word parts and endings. We are learning the diagraphs of CH, SH, TH, WH, and reviewing short and long vowel sounds. The spelling words for the last few weeks are the tricky vowel sounds that we will practice more. Please read to your child often and encourage them to discuss the material you have read. Children in first and second grade still need to hear stories read aloud to increase their vocabulary and knowledge. Please let them read to you for at least 5 minutes every night. Please praise good reading skills and limit negative responses when they have difficulty. Give them encouragement and set them up for success by looking through the book with them and discussing difficult words or phrases before they try to read independently. As summer vacation gets closer, I hope that all parents will make a committment to reading with your child each week. The Faulker County Library is an excellent source for literature, DVD's and video tapes. As always, if you have any concerns, questions, etc., please call, visit, email or write a note. Please check the calendar for your student's activities in the coming weeks. There are many special activities planned for the students. Track and field is the week of April 25 - 29. You can access the calendars from Mr. Edward's Quia page. email address: dayp@brier3.afsc.k12.ar.us
