The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle, is a fantasy story about a chameleon who wishes to be like every other animal it sees. His wishes are granted in a comical manner - he acquires the wings of a flamingo, the head of an elephant, the feet of a deer, the shell of a turtle, and so on until he loses all that was unique to himself. In the end, the chameleon learns it is better to simply be oneself.

I was fortunate in finding many wonderful background and enrichment links to correlate with The Mixed-Up Chameleon. Your child can have lots of fun making his own mixed-up animals, learning about chameleons, and watching animals on live cam or at a virtual zoo by clicking on links from the Useful links section at the bottom of the Class Page.

Vocabulary practice games and electronic flashcards can be found by clicking the Java Games link under Quia activities. Once your child knows the words and definitions, have him put the vocabulary words in sentence context in the Columns Game.

The Mixed-Up Chameleon; is the final story of Theme 1, Being Me!. We will test Theme 1 vocabulary and comprehension the week of October 9th. Your child will need to review all the vocabulary word lists from the last five stories for the theme vocabulary test.
