Week of May 7, 2007
In the fantasy story Abuela, by Arthur Dorros, a girl and her grandmother take an imaginary trip over New York City. The story is filled with Spanish phrases because Abuela's first language is Spanish. You will find a glossary and pronunciation guide at the end of the story on page 305 of the reader.
Your child can review and practice the vocabulary words and definitions for Abuela by clicking the Java Games link in the Quia activities section below. It may be helpful to print out the list of terms (vocabulary words and meanings) from the game choices page so your child can refer to them as needed during practice. Once your child can easily match the words and definitions, try playing the Columns Game where vocabulary words are used in the context of sentences.
The Useful links section at the bottom of the Class Page features hyperlinks to other sites that contain background materials and enrichment activities that go along with this week's story. These links are provided as an extra opportunity for fun and learning for you and your second grader.
Bonus Activity: Use one of the links for the Useful links section to print out a picture of the Statue of Liberty. Color it and draw Rosalba and Abuela flying over it like they did in the story. Bring your picture to school and show it to Ms. Pellarin in exchange for a small prize.
