Week of May 21, 2007
Our final second grade reading selection is Postcards from Pluto, by Loreen Leedy. In it, a group of children tour the solar system with Dr. Quasar as their guide. The children learn many fascinating facts about the Sun, Earth's moon, the nine planets, and asteroids. They share their new knowledge by writing postcards home describing what they see and learn along the way.
Your child can review and practice the vocabulary words and definitions for Postcards from Pluto by clicking the Java Games link in the Quia activities section below. It may be helpful to print out the list of terms (vocabulary words and meanings) from the game choices page so your child can refer to them as needed during practice. Once your child can easily match the words and definitions, try playing the Columns Game where vocabulary words are used in the context of sentences.
The Useful links section at the bottom of the Class Page features hyperlinks to other sites that contain background materials and enrichment activities that go along with this week's story. These links are provided as an extra opportunity for fun and learning for you and your second grader.
Here's the last Bonus Activity of the year! Use the ***Astronomy for Kids:Pluto*** or the ***Enchanted Learning*** links below to find the answer to this problem: A year on Pluto lasts much longer than a year on Earth. Find out how many Earth years it takes to equal a year on planet Pluto. Write your answer in this number sentence:
One year on Pluto = ____ years on Earth.
If you can show Ms. Pellarin the correct answer, she'll reward you with a prize.
