Week of February 26, 2001
Angel Child, Dragon Child describes what it is like to be the new student at school - a difficult thing for any child, but even worse for a child from another country. The main character of the the story, Ut, encounters teasing and unkindness at every turn until she finds the words to make the other children understand what it is like to be her. Once this happens, everyone works together to bring Ut her heart's desire - the means to bring her mother to America from Vietnam. This story teaches tolerance and understanding of those who are different from ourselves.
Your child can review and practice vocabulary list words with the games I have linked below. Just click on the Java Games link in the Quia activities section and it will take you directly to the games choices page. It may be helpful to print out the list of terms (vocabulary list words and definitions used in the games) from the games choices page so your child can refer to them as needed during practice.
Geography Connection: Find Vietnam on a map or globe at home. How far away is it from where you live? How long do you think Ut's Mother had to travel to get to the United States? What do you think it is like in Vietnam? Learn more about Vietnam by clicking on links in the Useful links section at the bottom of the Class Page.
Answer to last week's Bonus Question: The item that did not belong with the rest of the information on the Class Page was the picture of the polar bear! That's right - polar bears live in the Arctic, not in Antarctica.
