Week of April 16, 2001
The last story of Unit 2 is Princess Pooh, by Kathleen Muldoon. This selection uses humor to introduce the topics of physical challenges and sibling rivalry. The main character, Patty Jean Piper, is jealous of all the attention her older sister receives because she is confined to a wheelchair - that is, until she 'borrows' the chair and uses it for an afternoon. Patty Jean has a change in attitude after she finds out what it would really be like to be physically challenged like her sister Penny.
A guest speaker from the physical therapy department of Peterson Hospital will talk to our students about different types of physical challenges this week. She will show the children many of the helpful devices used in therapy, and our students will have the opportunity to try out some of these devices.
Your child can review and practice vocabulary list words with the games I have linked below. Just click on the Java Games link in the Quia activities section and it will take you directly to the games choices page. It may be helpful to print out the list of terms (vocabulary list words and definitions used in the games) from the games choices page so your child can refer to them as needed during practice.
This week's Useful links section includes links to books and poems about sibling rivalry, photos and information about Special Olympics, and other links to sports and information for physically challenged children and adults.
The Hangman Game for review of all the vocabulary words from the second unit will be added at the end of the week in time for the unit test next week.
Note: The test on Unit 2 will be given Thursday, April 26th.
