Week of May 14, 2001

This week's story, Llama and the Great Flood, is based on an ancient Peruvian myth. It takes place in the Andes Mountains where animals of every kind go to escape a great flood that is predicted by a llama. Children will enjoy the native artwork featured in the reader this week, as well as searching for the 'rock faces' cleverly illustrated and hidden in the pictures of the story. See how many you can find as you read Llama and the Great Flood with your child.

Your child can review and practice vocabulary list words with the games I have linked below. Just click on the Java Games link in the Quia activities section and it will take you directly to the games choices page. It may be helpful to print out the list of terms (vocabulary list words and definitions used in the games) from the games choices page so your child can refer to them as needed during practice. I have added a new match game, called Columns, for extra help with vocabulary practice. If you'd like to check your child's understanding of this week's story, click on the Jumbled Words game for a comprehension activity.

Okay, kids; are you ready for this week's Bonus Activity? Use the *New Hampshire Lama Association (www.nhla.org) site from the Useful Links section below to find and print any coloring sheet that shows a llama. Color, paint, or decorate it anyway you want, and bring it in to school to show Mrs. Pellarin. She'll give you a treat for taking the time to do this extra activity. Have fun!
