MORNING WORK:
Each week students will be assigned a variety of morning work before classes begin on Monday morning. All morning work is listed on my SmartBoard each morning until 8:10, when we begin prayer. All morning work is classwork, and every attempt should be made to complete this in the morning so your child can avoid last minute scrambles on Thursday nights, especially when other homework is assigned. Ample time is provided daily to finish this work, which we correct and collect on Fridays. See examples of some of the assigned morning work below:
Mountain Language:
Students are to complete 5 questions related to grammar concepts each morning. We review these concepts daily. Students work in cooperative learning groups and are allowed to discuss questions and answers quietly with their group members. We then correct and collect these on Fridays. For now, this counts as an 8 point classwork assignment, but starting at the end of September, these will count as a 20 point weekly quiz. Please understand that students are still learning this and although papers may come home corrrected with many mistakes, rest assured that I will not begin counting this as a quiz grade until I am certain that students are ready. More will follow on this as time goes on.
4B STUDENTS ONLY:
Journal Entries - I will assign a journal entry prompt on some Monday mornings. Students are to create a topic sentence from this prompt and then write a paragraph, using the "hamburger" method, that includes a topic sentence, at least 3 detail sentences, and a conclusion. These journal entries are worth 10 pts. I usually select a few to read aloud so that students can "hear" good examples of writing. When students hear what they write, they become much better at creating sentence fluency in their paragraphs.

Daily Grams:
Daily Grams are another part of morning work that are usually assigned almost every week on Monday mornings. These include one page of quick grammar review concepts for each day. Each page is numbered "Day One", "Day Two", etc. Students are given 4 grams a week in a packet and are asked to do one gram each day, Monday through Thursday. These take approximately 5 minutes each to complete. This is another strategy both Mrs. Tierney and I assign to help reinforce all language arts and grammar skills.
Scholastic News: 4B students receive a copy of Scholastic News, usually every week, but not always. These are given to students on Monday mornings and are due on Fridays. Students are to read all articles and then take the quiz at end of newsletter. This is a reading comprehension grade. At times, I will also take a Social Studies grade for the map skills page. Please be sure your child actually reads the articles and does not just guess on the answers, or does not try to complete all at the last minute. This generally results in a poor grade.
MORE INFORMATION WILL BE POSTED DAILY. Again, thank you for your patience.
