COMPUTER APPLICATIONS I Course Syllabus Instructor: Mr. Stegman Telephone: 277-2063 Room 149 Course Length: 1 Semester DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to expand the student’s skills with a word processor, database manager, and a spreadsheet. The specific applications covered include the Microsoft Office software of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Students will create a variety of business and personal documents. OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Log on and utilize networking capabilities. 2. Create a present a slideshow using PowerPoint. 3. Create documents and manipulate text using Microsoft Word. 4. Create and manipulate spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel. 5. Create and manipulate database using Microsoft Access. CLASSROOM TEACHING METHODS: Lecture, demonstration using projector, cooperative learning, individual learning, written and QUIA quizzes, textbook application assignments, review questions, QUIA games, term project and presentation, written and QUIA tests, hands-on applications. EVALUATION: Evaluation will be based on the following: attendance, class participation, textbook application assignments, term project presentations, tests, and quizzes. Grades are issued at nine week intervals. Progress reports will be issued the fourth week of each nine week period. Students are responsible for their work and to find out what needs to be done to achieve good academic standing, i.e. retake a test or complete exercises on information covered. The grading scale will be 100 A+ 99-94 A 93-90 A- 89-87 B+ 86-83 B 82-80 B- 79-77 C+ 76-73 C 72-70 C- 68-69 D+ 66-67 D 65 D- 0-64 F The lowest grade for credit will be a 65%. KEEP FOOD OR DRINK AWAY FROM THE COMPUTERS 5. ARRIVE TO CLASS PREPARED 6. STRIVE TO BE SUCCESSFUL Procedures: 1. Get to class as quickly as possible. 2. Turn work in on time. You have 3 days to make up assignments and tests if you miss school. After 3 days the assignment is recorded as a zero. You are also required to serve after school detention. If you know you are going to be absent, try to make up the work ahead of time. 3. If you fail to turn in an assignment when it is due you will receive an NHI (not handed in). NHI will cost you 30 minutes of detention. 4. Textbooks are available to check out by students for make up work or study purposes. Students are responsible for replacement costs of books that are lost or not returned. ($50.00) 5. All students @ HHS were assigned a flash drive. This will be used to store assignments. 6. You may work on assignments at home with your laptop and your flash drive. 7. One student at a time will be permitted to use the restroom. Make sure you take the pass. 8. Grades will be posted weekly and sent to your gaggle e-mail. 9. Missing task reports will be handed out each class time or as often as needed. 10. Tornado and Fire procedures are posted in the classroom for easy reference. 11. Each student is instructed on how to view the course syllabus. 12. Each student that reads the directions on my web page can earn 25 bonus points. This must be accomplished by Friday, August 28, 2010. 13.
